The business of cricket

Mr Nair is correct in his assessment on the business parameters that affect our cricket. It is high time the sport became more professional and is run like a busines ought to be run. For starters, the BCCI should be reconstituted to get rid of the "Indian Raj Syndrome" that most of its members have come to enjoy and should be replaced with a professional body consisting of 5 members who would form the Core Committee. The 5 members to be drawn would be represented by one member each from erstwhile players, exsisting player association, major sponsor representative, one National level beureaucrat with a passion for Cricket and One person who has a good social standing and can be considered as a neutral arbitrator in case of any discrepencies in the selection.

Monies paid to the players should be a mix of 25% pay and 75% incentives, based on the level of game - test or one dayer and would consist of parameters like runs scored, saved, etc. It is imperetive that the players earn their money and not just recieve it as a gift. Sponsorship is a private affair, however, a part of the deal should be set aside for a Trust Fund that would take care of other players who do not get so lucky.

A pension plan to compensate the players who do not have any vocation once they retire from the game could be planned so that there is an additional motivation to look forward to. THis is all the more neccessary for the domestic tourneys where the financial returns are a joke anyway. Unless this chasm between the National Players and the domestic players is reduced, there would be impetus to compete.

The sports ministry should question the board why BCCI is not resorting to bouncy tracks? Make the board accountable. Unfortunately the present players do not seem to have national spirit. They play hard cricket for few years to get into the side and attain "permanent status" after which they literally choose when to apply and when to take it easy. We don't need 50-60 averages, we need players like kapil and street-fighter like javed miandad who deliver when it actually needed and show tremendous national pride. I just read a line from chandu borde saying sachin told him he is not enjoying the game. i got shocked maybe he meant he is not enjoying captaining. If it is not then he has no business to continue playing.
