This is the first time that death toll has been more in the capital City of Hyderabad, compared to other place-especially coastal places which used to be the worst hit by floods etc at time of incessant rains like this. This clearly shows the abject lack of proper drainage facilities to flush out the rain water in the city.Despite manifold increase in city's population due to migration from all the cities and settlers from other states too,the civic authorities have not taken any measures, whatsoever, to improve the sewerage system which was laid almost a century back by the Nizam. No successive govt has taken initiative to improve the civic life of the people of the city although some thing good was done to widen the roads during TDP time which, of course, cannot take the credit of well utilisation of all the funds borrowed from world bank, since it too, like any other govt interested in bettering the lives of contractors of interested category, spent unwarrantedly colossal amounts on fly over which are not all needed for the city at this juncture.Instead of alerting & evacuating the low lying areas in the vicinity of Hussain Sagar, the surroundings of which,of late, have also been converted into places of high rise residential complexes,Govt should not have permitted constructions around Hussain Sagar. There was no long range plan to protect the growing city from all such calamities. It is time at least, now, for the Govt to preserve the serenity in and around the prestigious lake.
