Number of IITs
by Biraja Prasad Kanungo on Oct 28, 2003 10:40 AM   Permalink

I have been hearing this news about increasing the number of IITs from few of my friends. I am a fellow IITian (IIT-Madras)& right now doing my MS from the Ohio State University. Ofcourse friends who have done their bachelors from RECs are very happy to propagate this news that'll make them IITians in future...at least they can say they are from IIT-X, who cares. I just wanna ask one question to those who are in support of this idea, IS THIS GOING TO REALLY IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY IN INDIA? Retrospecting out history, I would say that most of the IITians come to US for higher studies & later on settle in US (more bucks...eh). Ofcourse that does not help India at all. If this is the case then obviously increasing number of IITs is not a logical solution to this. I would not like to give a logical solution as it will go against mu own freedom and will be against my juniors from IIT. But definitely increasing IITs would mean, hey dude I went to a grocery shop...got discount because the shopkeeper was a classmate of mine from IIT. Is that what we are heading towards in future? I wanna make a strong statement here saying, "This would definitely dilute the superiority of IITs".
