Not a Brahminical issue
by manjunath Lakshmipathy on Jun 04, 2007 07:35 PM

It is well known that Guruvaiyur temple follows strict traditional approach that only those who have faith in Hindu religion visit the temple. Such an approach does not necessariliy undermine the secular fabric of the society in any way. Thus the temple has not been challenged to explain its practices in the past. In this particular incident, however, the temple authorities have hurt the sentiments of the family involved. In this age and time, it needs to be little more flexible. This however does not mean that the themple abondan all its pracitices, but simply handle devotees with little more sensivity. In this particular incident, it is also possible some priests might have taken the decisions unilaterally as well. There is no need get the courts involved nor toaccuse the brahmins of high handedness.

The family involved can have an open dialogue and there is certainly room for amicable settlement. I am sure things of thus nature happen in other faiths as well.
