I don't understand this "holier than thou" mentality. The our son, your son story, I mean... Well, they don't burn their wifes and daughters-in-law for dowry, do they? Or in general harass their daughters for dowry? Why is it that in India, in most weddings, the lady's side has to bear all expenses of the wedding? Why is it unsafe for women in many cities after dark, whereas women in the US can walk on the street anytime of the day and generally be safe? Why do you need ladies compartments in Indian trains? Ever wondered why? Here's why - women in the first world have much more freedom and social rights than here. They are therefore more likely to walk away from an abusive or adulterous relationship than an Indian woman (log kya kahenge mentality). They are more financially stable - most have a career. We by and large suppress our women (in varying degrees, somewhat less in metros, more in villages).
Every culture has it's positives and negatives. Do not be under the impression that every american family is like that. In fact, such families are in the minority. Yes, divorce rates in the US are much higher than in India, but still most marriages (except in hollywood) go the distance.
BTW, from personal experience, Desis have no value for their word. Ethics is something we as a culture lack - everything is fair if money can be made is very very common. Second being dignity of labour.
