Commendable initiative
by Nanditha on Dec 04, 2008 01:51 AM

Fully appreciate your commendable initiative. The point about media contacting guests in the hotel on their mobile phones, affected me the most. You're right, this definitely would have endangered many lives ! Forget a crisis situation, we all know the attention a call or msg. on the mobile attracts while in a quite room or in a meeting ! Indeed a very irresponsible act by the media.

Incidentally, CNN anchor Sara Sidner also noted that the media was being allowed to report from very close to the blast site. This is unthinkable in the US or UK, where the reporters report from a safe distance. Moreover reporters were incessantly questioning firemen / police / commandos, thereby hampering them in carrying out their duties. Live coverage may have helped some of the victims’ family members to know the situation on the ground. However, this does not justify the risks such coverage poses. To draw an analogy - do we get a min. by min. update on the progress of a life and death surgery of a loved one? Don't we let the surgeons do their job? The same restraint has to be shown during blasts at public places. I rest my case here. Hope you are successful in your initiative. Good luck.
