The House of Tatas has earned the respect the command over 100 of years. From the day Jamshedji Tata challenged the British to set up the first Indian Steel Plant. Sure Tatas make money. In business you have to make money. But, fair money. Tatas can’t be accused of unfair business practice. Neither can you accuse them of not contributing to the social sectors. Numerous education institutions, hospitals and research organization are proofs.
The WB government acquired land for the Tata Plant. The WB government is responsible to the people, of Singur for a fair deal. Only thing that Tatas for that matter any business establishment would look for before setting up manufacturing are Infrastructure, Law & order and availability of suitable labour.
If the WB government has been unfair to the Land owners of Singur, she should take it up with the WB government and get a fair price for the people. WB, once the leader has been turned into a third rate state, in social and economic indicators. If Tatas leave today, no one will even touch WB even with a barge pole, and WB will be in the wildness for decades to come.
The Thinking Bhadralook should step in to resolve this political opportunism for the sake of Bengal’s future. We must recognise that this issue as it stands now is not just an issue of 400 acres and fair pricing anymore, but the future of generations of Bengalis.
