do we need more IIT's
by sanjeev on Oct 18, 2003 02:40 AM

As an alumnus of IITD i am very concerned.. I feel bad when the government wants to use IIT as a brand name. Enhancing the facilities at other engg colleges is good but let them create their own brand name.the IIT brand name has been established by the hardwork of its professors and the talent pool that it has managed to attract over the years. Therefore a slight reduction in quality of graduates from other engg colleges branded as IIT will hamper the image of the existing IITs. The hardwork of the last 5 decades will be lost. The increase in batch sizes at the existing IITs have already hampered the quality of education, there are not enough hostels..the labs are not being maintained, there is severe shortage of computer and library facilities, the cancellation of grants on the logic of brain drain has already forced iit's to raise its fees drastically, inhibiting the underprivileged but competent student to study at iit.

I strongly agree with one of my professors who said " Its better to have Brain Drain, Than to have Brain in drain". The govt is responsible for not providing the IItians with good research facilities and forcing them to go to US.Tag of IIT will not produce IITian
