The ratio of the number of bright students to the total number of students(technical education) present in the country is definitely one of the highest in the world.
Added to that is the fact that schooling levels are pretty uniform across the country. This simply points to the fact that there are lesser number of seats available vis-a-vis the number of deserving students.
Therefore I think that this is a good decision as long as this does not go on unabated.Let us finally have 12 IITs for atleast the next 20 years.
But does it really matter? The Indian economy is NOT driven by IIT graduates. It is a matter of utter disappointment and distaste that corporate India does not recognize IITians as "valuable" assets.Instead IITians are just a part of the large crowd emerging out of "baseless" and "low-quality" engg colleges.
Today, in India, IITians are treated as "commodities".
Corporates and academic institutions in USA understand the true value of IITians better than anyone else.
So in the end, it does not matter whether you have 12 or 120 IITs.On hindsight,it must be said that RECs have been loyal to India, and I guess they now deserve some rewards.
