More? No way...
by Mudit Shekhawat on Oct 20, 2003 08:15 PM

Creating more IIT's is the governments justificaion of
churning out more talented engineers. But there is a flaw in
the logic here. IIT's have been known to be the place where,
the so-called, the cream of our country go for their studies.
But there is only a finite number of bright young engineers
that the country turns out each year. Making more IITs and
creating more seats will lead to a dilution of the talent pool.
The image that the IITs have strived to create over the past 5
decades will be diluted too. Besides there is already of
surplus engineers in the country. Even the IITs are faring
very poorly in getting all their graduates placed. Increasing
the number IITians that pass out each year will blur their
distinction as every second guy will be from some or the
other IIT. Besides, the government can do much better by
allotting more funds to the existing IITs. The facilities at IITs,
though by far the best in the country, are still nowhere even
near to those in countries like the US. So, my view is, that
instead of a whole bunch of mediocre institutes, the
government should concentrate on increasing the level of
the present IIT's to world-class standards.
