Mr. Dinesh, to understand Devdas, please read the book. I am not sure whether its English translation has come out or not, but there is good Hindi translation. To put it very simply, Devdas didnt get his sweetheart Parvati because of social and financial stigma imposed by his father and Devdas did not have the courage to defy his parents, neither he nor Parvati want to elop also. Emotionally trapped he started frequenting call girls and one such girl, Chandramukhi fell in love with him. Chandramukhi realized Devdas is a gem of a person, with real education and unimaginable control and restraint of character. Devdas also slowly started loving her but his health revolted and here also they could not marry. Devdas promised Parvati he will visit her once, sick and alone he came to Parvati's house and died. Sarat Chandra says everyone has to die once he is born, there is no need for any philosophical discussion for that, but when one dies, the pain becomes bearable if there is some companion to shed a few tears by his side. Devdas is the tale of a highly educated, cultured and understanding personality who finds himself handicapped due to his depression arising out of sophistication of a mind always residing at a higher level. Helplessness in surealism.
