Positive social networking
by Bhoomika Chowdary on Dec 22, 2009 07:29 PM

First, this study is not new. A Boston based firm conducted a survey, reported a few months earlier, revealed decreases in productivity due to socializing on the internet during office hours. They reported a 1.5 % decrease in productivity. Reports of a research project from the University of Melbourne recently suggests that people who spend a reasonable amount of time on the internet for fun at work are actually more productive. They claim that it is a process of socializing which includes telephone conversations, texting, e:mail, and personal interaction. It can be beneficial if put to right use. One might get new ideas; exchange views; and possibly can make new vital contacts - which can enhance productivity. The workplace definition is also significantly altered in this age, with room for flexibility and relaxation which can be a good stress reliever.
Organizations will not be seriously affected in not curbing this activity.
