tasty cheap lunch
by VINOD HARITWAL on Jul 20, 2006 05:25 PM

When in Calcutta, go to Mangoe Lane, near Mission Row - at lunch time KAKA Tea Stall offers varieties of veg curries and hot tandoori roties and a sweet - all within Rs. 20/- . Or you can have Dosa and Idly within this price.

In the evening have Puchkas (Golgappas) at the crossing of Bentink Street - Waterloo Street near Amber Restaurant. I am a Puchka lover and these beat all other puchkas hollow (pun intended).

If you are a samosa lover, go to Tiwari Brothers - Kalakar Street, Burra Bazar or Circular Road near Camac Street - two samosas and two jalebies (both made in desi ghee) are enough to fill your stomach for the next 4 hours. All within Rs. 20/-.

At Mouchak - Circular Road-Theatre Road crossing - have Radhaballabhi (kachori) with Alu Dum and a Misti Doi - enough for lunch - within Rs. 20/-

At Dacres Lane, Esplanade, have chicken curry or egg curry and roti or Yellow peas ghughni and toast and finish your lunch within Rs. 20/-

Or at any street corner have two bananas, one portion Muri Masala and one cup tea - all within Rs. 20/- - healthy and filling.

In Calcutta Rs. 20/- takes you a long way - at least 4-5 hours, gastronomically speaking.
