coterie of young players - exclusion of senior players other than himself. this led to the senior players protecting their ass post chapell days.
chapell was good in a way that he ditched the quota raj, IN TANDEM, with ganguly. not all of his ideas were bad. however, when sauravs own form went bad - he completely went in the opposite direction of chapell. this is where saurav's coterie of young players helped him.
when saurav was ousted subsequently , and the chapell fiasco - sachin knew the mess he was getting into, so he opted out, he fully knew that he's not going to get his team, like once before. dravid is pretty much a lame duck, he was a lesser version of sachin and was clueless about the ways the regional bias and team dynamics/ politics moved, he followed chapell, and had a raw deal in terms of team co-operation. the last straw was when saurav refused to accelerate in a match - a match against bangla, which we lost - due to slow run rate. of course people would say why not the rest of the players do well - thats the mess saurav left behind in the wake of his ouster. worse still - dravid himself was not doing any good with his batting. surav could force a form by playing slowly, those days he was completely out of form, but he played slowly and accumulated runs - just to prove he was in form.
tragically, that slow innings of saurav came at the worst possible time - not during a test, but during a crucial world cup match.
