Double Standards
by Satish Seetharam on Apr 20, 2007 07:02 PM

The issue is about how open men are in accepting that women in India are getting more and more financially and economically independent and trying to stand on their own accord without being protected by men. It is the men who want to see Indian women as sati savitirs while they set their own standards. It is time that women be given an opportunity to decide what is acceptable social norms and morality instead of men deciding for them.

It is very important that society is not homogenous. So is culture. What is considered acceptable by one can be utterly unacceptable by someone else.

It is time that people stop assuming they have a franchise on morality and tell how others should live.

If Shilpa wants to kiss someone, it is her choice. If people don't like it, they better not engage in an discussion about her. Just because she kissed someone doesn%u2019t make her any less Indian.

Let's live and let live.

Breaking taboos
by on Apr 19, 2007 02:22 PM  | Hide replies

Wasn't this incident at a HIV awareness campaign? What is the real shame here that more than 5.2 million people in India have HIV or that two actors kissed in public? Perhaps this was an act intended to symbolise the breaking of taboos- which is necessary in the fight against HIV. The lawyers and the courts ought to have more sense than to consider this as a grave matter and invest their time in something that might benefit the public

Good for you Shilpa

I must admit, finally I think I will support you. You go girl.. no need to apologize. What is the big deal about kissing in public.. if that is true for India.. I guess all movies that show kissing on the screen should be banned.. I think it is time that people grow up and accept realities of today.

The funny thing about India is that we want to be like the west.. speak in English.. watch American movies and TV, dress like the west and what is wrong is showing affection publicly - affection be it romantic or friendly.

People who have problems with " the reality" are frustrated, deprived people who can't get out of their hole.

Please move on and please get real

bigger issues
by on Apr 18, 2007 10:38 PM

I dont understand why it kissing is taboo. They kissed on the cheek as affection. yes, he went overboard, but for a country that invented Kama Sutra ie. 75 sexual positions to please your lover, whats the big deal? Can a husband kiss his wife in public or is that taboo too? India is one of the most overpopulated nations in the world, and also has one of the highest amount of rapes, obviously ppl are kissing by why all hiding and taboo. i mean everything in moderation. how ppl react and respond to this issue should be addressed in a different way. maybe try being a bit more open. as for richard gere, he should have asked her if it was ok...she would have said no and he would have been a gentleman , problem solved! theres bigger issues that media should cover.

Guys we have so many problems in India. Why don't you focus on them. Why should we look into someones personals matters. If Shilpa feels that Gere misbehaved then she can register FIR. When she don't have any problem why we are wasting our time. Wake up guys. We have so many problems in India
