Indian players
by Ravi Kumar on Mar 22, 2007 03:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Our team is good for endrosing commercial ads and make money out of it rather than play and bring accolades to the nation. India doesn't play only cricket we play other games too. But nobody is worried/upset if india loses in other games. Come on Guys BCCI is the most profit making organistaion now and their players are benefitted too. Even after 60 years we are unable to send good athelitcs to OLYMPICS. I always like India to Win not only Circket but in other games. Hopefully times will change and we can witness our players doing better in all walks of games.

Endorsing in adsis their personal interested. It is non of our business to interefere in their personal matters.
regarding making money everyone likes to make good money. Cricket is a game, to win or lose,it is part & parcel of the game. So don't expect them to bring laurels for the country everytime. If every country wins each and every game they play then who will lose & there will be no such thing called competition.
Grow up man & try to accept the facts

Look Guys whether indian players make money thru commercials is none of our business. Are u not making money i ur chosen profession? And Lot of them sacrificed their education to take up something they liked. don't u think they deserve to earn in their chosen field? Thats very cheap. They are performing as any other good team. they make big runs, entertain us most of the time. and we are selfish people who start criticize them the moment they loose one match. That is extremely unfair!

Would Sri Lanka prefer India or Bangladesh in the Super 8's?
by on Mar 22, 2007 03:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The question that seems to be bandied about is what would motivate Sri Lanka to win against India given that they have more or less made it through to the Super 8's (barring the remotest possibility that India thrashes Sri Lanka and Bangladesh then thrashes Bermuda by more than 350 runs).
Now, I believe that on current form and momentum Sri Lanka are favourites to win the India-SL tie (not clear favourites but slightly ahead of India). So what would they choose: perform to form and get a narrow win over India OR underperform slightly and let India win the match narrowly.
If SL wins then India is out, Bangladesh are in and SL goes through with 2 points. If they lose, India is in and SL carries 0 points.
An argument has been expressed earlier saying that SL would want to keep the contest for semi spots alive by letting India through at their own expense.
This argument is completely wrong. Here's why. There are two base scenarios:
(a) SL and India go through: SL - 0, Ind - 2
The best result for SL is then Ind beats everyone else. So versus India, everybody else has 0 points and are on the same plate as SL. Meanwhile India emerge top of the group and book their SF spot. SL fights it out for the 3 spots with 6 other teams (discounting Ireland) who have an advantage since 3 of them carried 2 points from their group.
The worst result would be if India loses to everyone else. Then SL is on 0 and others are on 2 points vis-a-vis India.
(b) SL and Ban go through: SL - 2, Ban - 0
The best result is if Ban beats everyone else. So SL will have 2 point vs Ban and others will have 0 points. Meanwhile Ban are assured of a SF spot. SL battles with 6 others (again Ireland discounted) for 3 SF spots with the chance of facing Ban again in semis (and thus assuring a finals spot).
The worst result is if Ban loses to everyone else. Then all teams will be on 2 points with regard to Ban and SL will be at par with others.
SL then fights for 4 SF spots with 6 teams.

Summarising, SL's best result with Ind present would mean fighting for 3 spots with 6 teams (that include Aus, RSA, NZ) and the possibility of facing a confident India in semis.
SL's worst result with Ban would mean fighting for 4 spots with 6 teams.
Clearly, even the worst result with Ban is better than the best result with India.
If I were the SL think tank, I know what I would choose. :)
Of course, all this talk is unnecessary if we realize a simple truth. It is always better to go into the Super 8's with 2 points than with no points at all.

by Cricket Lover on Mar 22, 2007 09:50 PM  Permalink
Point taken. My entire agenda while writing this particular piece was that people realise the difference between 'making the World Cup interesting' and 'winning the World Cup'.
For me and millions of cricket lovers, we would like India to get to the Super 8's since then the matches would become competitive and interesting. The Sri Lankan team (a mere 15-20 people) would like nothing more than the Super 8's to look like Zim, Ire, Ned, Sco, Ban, Can, Ken and SL since they want to WIN THE WORLD CUP (like all other teams).
If we confuse our interests with those of the Sri Lankan team then we land up with logic like 'SL would want Ind in Super 8 since they want the SF spots as open as possible'.
Of course, if you still feel that 'Kichadi paka di', please read the last lines of my post. That should present the clearest picture.

What you say makes lots of money sense! India would definitely win albeit by a very close margin to make it appear realistic! It is for the same reason some of the players are in indian team, coz the ad contract runs for a longer period and they would want to extract mileage to the last penny! Compare this with the aussie team where likes of Damien Martyn, Hayden, Gilchrist, Michael Clark can be dropped when the perform below par!

Ganguly's praise..
by pratham mumbai on Mar 22, 2007 03:23 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is quite embarassing that people are admiring Ganguly for no reason. He is playing for himself to stoop down Dravid.Against Barmuda where all the batsman's strike rate is above 100, his is 60. What does he want to prove. He is willingly playing slow.

Excuse me!

He was the only batsman who crossed 50 run mark, Yuvraj being the second highest scoring with 47 runs and Dravid, Zaheer, Munaf Patel were the third highest scorers with only 13 runs. Imagine, Mr. Pratham, if Ganguly would have gone cheaply, do you really think India would have achieved 191 run mark.. He played according to the pitch, with more responsibility.. Tell, in such low scoring match, strike rate matters or one's score matters?.....

No one is try to say that gungaly is not performing consistently or others are better than him. ut the fact is he is playing at a slow rate, which is not good for india.
Even in the match against Bangladesh, instead of scoring 66 in 129 balls head he score 96 in 129 balls there would have been a lot difference.
He is playing at slow rate to establish himself in the team, becos he still fears that if he doesnot scores he will be sacked. but if he continues at this pace, then.......

i agree with you..if not 100% strike rate, he should atleast have it around 80-85%...especially against Bermuda! Hope does better tomorrow...i know he has been given the role of playing through the innings but that does'nt mean strike rate of 60%...does'nt make sense at all!

As Ganguly was consistent in the start, India was able to make up the score of 413. Till 30 overs there was no wickets down except 1, this creates pressure on the opposite team. I strongly believe that consistency is important than proving the run rate. The person who watches match in keen would understand this.

Thanks for Paranm Here is someone who noticed the real fact. I surprise to see media Ga Ga ... about Ganguly. How stupdly he batted against Bermuda, being a senior man he should accelerated the runs further. Any way people dont agree with me they say he anchored the innings against Bermuda!!!! strange.

Yeah even though top order failed with bangladesh, It is becos of Ganguly's slow batting we lost with Bangladesh, had he batted at a bit faster rate we would have scored 225 runs. Look at yuvraj he was also in pressure when he came to bat, but he scored handsomely. Why can't Ganguly score like him? The reason is:
1) He has limited scoring shots. either a cover drive or jumping down the track and hitting over the bowlers head. If he tries somthing else he gets out.
2)He wants to cement his place in the team irrespective to India's victory/defeat. Thats why he takes his own time to settle down and score.
with SL. If he doesnot scores at a brisk pace & rotate the strike India will be in tight position becos of him
