Super 8s
by Samir Moosa on Mar 22, 2007 05:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India will definitely make it to the Super 8 Stage. All they have to do is bat, bowl and field well. It may sound like basics, but thats what they didnt get right against Bangladesh. Result is this that they have to compete with an incompetent team like Bangladesh (which has a record to one day win against Australia and next day loose against Bermuda for all you know). Knowing India's strength and weakness, it would be ideal to have Kumble bowl in place of Harbhajan, and have an additional bowling / batting option in Irfan Pathan (instead of Uthappa). Irfan in a sordid day would give away 50 runs when bowling, but take one or two wickets and score 30 / 40, which Uthappa cant. Zaheer, Agarkar and Munaf are looking good, although the former two are giving away quite a few runs. The best thing is the return of form of Maharaj Ganguly and his Yuvraj. Sehwag still does not convince me although he did score a ton agains minnows Bermuda, but as usual threw away his wicket when the going was smooth. Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly, Kumble, come on guys we have full faith in you. Make your last world cup count...... We are counting on you .........

Any team that bats well, bowls well and fields well can not only qualify for the supr 8 stage but win the WC.

I feel Indians will be quite tense going into the game with SL, while SL will be relaxed and enjoying the game. Sadly, India havent performed very well when they are tensed (e.g. they havent won of late any game where the winner takes all).

Lets hope for the best but if I was a betting man I will put my money on SL.

hey samir, ur idea of dropping uthappa and taking pathan is right.. but i dont think Agarkar is bowling particularly well..He is giving away runs all too easily. even against teams like Bermuda, he gave away 6's and 4's like no big deal. he has been wayward right from the first match onwards. they should take certain bowlers who can provide breakthroughs at the right time. I think Sreesanth could be the difference in the Indian side. Have Your Say...

Arian, you are right. Didnt think on that line. Sreesanth is definitely a bright prospect. The only problem is that Agarkar holds the bat better than Sreesanth, which gives him the edge. If a bowler gives away, say 50 runs, but make 30 runs and takes 2 crucial wickets he is more effective in an ODI than a bowler who takes 3 wickets and gives away only 20.

I would still go with an attacking bowler who can take wickets than with an allrounder who can bowl fairly well and bat fairly well.

If a bowler takes 3 wickets for 20 then the opposition have scored 30 runs less, so the tailender does not have to score those 30 runs!

Also if the top 7 cant make the runs then it is silly to expect the bottom 4 to help post a winning total!

man samir.. agarkar is as unpredictable with the bat as he is with the ball.. I would still go with sreesanth hitting a six off Vaas, and then doing an item number or break dance for all of us. :)

India cannot win the match against SriLanka tomorrow. In order for India to win, India have to bat, bowl and field exceptionally well. I'm not sure about bowling and fielding. Chances of India winning are less. Sri Lanka are a much better team now than before.

I am not fully in agreement with you. It will be a 60 - 40 Match in favour of India. Donot forget saurav and sachin are playing well with Sehwag to follow with our bowlers Specially Munaf.

and donot forget Uthappa with his massive hitting he can be devastating in the previous encounters

accept the reality. thrashing what srilanka gave to bangladesh is the fine example of how well tuned lankans are. India will have to play out of their skin to beat them.

As an Indian i want India to win and moreover bowl first but as far i know Sri Lanka beat India all the time in World Cup and Sanath Jayasuriya is alll the time scored heavily. Can some one tell anytime Jayasuriya scored two consecutive centuries as he scored one against bangladesh

Gurmit Singh ji.. I think ur General Knowledge is weak. Except for 1996 World Cup which Sri Lanka eventually won, They have never beaten India in the world Cup. 1999, Saurav and dravid scored big centuries and India won by some 100 runs odd. In 2003 again India ended up beating Sri Lanka.

Sure, Sri Lanka seems to be stronger than India, but you are wrong when you say Sri Lanka has won all the matches against India in World Cups. In the last World Cup India had defeated Sri Lanka by 183 runs in the Super Six round. India had scored 292 and Sri Lanka were bowled out for a mere 109.

I do not think that it is impossible for India to defeat Sri Lanka tomorrow. But I agree, Sri Lanka are the favourites.

Gurmit you are wrong. The last 2 World Cups India gave a pasting to the Lankans. 1999 I think India won by over 150 runs and in 2003 I remember SL being down 4 wickets with not even 10 on the board. Of course they did beat India in 1996 and way back in 1979.

If we bat first our openers should blunt the lankan pace attack by aggressive cricket. (not stupidly trying to hit every ball, of course). This will enable to put up a total close to 280 which is a winning score. Even if the rest score 30 or 35 except the tail enders we can post a winning total. The law of averages is against the Lankans.

It is impossible to beat sriLanka,as Muttaiah Muralidharan in superb form, Sanath came back as in 1996.Where is the Bowling strength of India?.Sachin is habituated to fail in crucial matches. Dada can attack Muralidharn. Uthappa,Sehwag, Dhone,no hopes. Like a candile in the air.Yavraj saab and Dravid may do a little bit, after all they are also humanbeings. So common India , say bye bye to world cup on 23.3.07.

Srilanka more benifited if it looses to INDIA
by ravi on Mar 22, 2007 05:18 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If srilanka Looses the Match agianst means,It is Helpful to Srilanka. Strange Right? Yes it is "In the next level Srilanka Wont play with the same group team, But All the teams will play agianst its groupteam say india for example. If Bangladesh in super 8 along with Srilanka, Almost all the teams get One Win over bangladesh for sure. So srilanka chances to go to semis will be very less. As other teams get one Easy win. So You can imgine easily , as Irland is along with Westindies, So no chance that Westindies will go to Semifinal. So You can eliminate Westindies and Iralnd from Super 8. now itself.

actually it remains irrelevant for Srilanka. if bangladesh qualifies, srilanka will carry 2 points and other 7 will also get 2 points against bangladesh. no profit no loss. if India qualifies, srilanka carries no points and other 7 are at par to get or not to get. but if India doesnt play well in super 8, other 6 can have 2 points against India while srilanka not having them. so chances of loss for srilanka but of no profit for them. hence, srilanka may choose to enter with bangladesh.

but watever they want India will play well on Friday, beat srilanka and carry 2 points to super 8. Best of luck Indian team...

No. Mr. You are wrong, if Sri Lanka Loses to India, it won't carry 2 points because it has lost the match to India. But if Sri Lanka Wins against India, it will carry 2 points with them becuase they have already defeated Bangladesh.
