BIMARU list has shrunk
by Harsha Kumar on Mar 19, 2008 06:15 PM  Permalink

The main stumbling blocks to India's development now are not BIMARU but the BIU states. Even MP and Rajasthan seem to be showing signs of progress - there are reasonably progressive CMs, and the law of the land exists more than just on paper. The same cannot be said about the infamous 'cow belt' of UP and Bihar where things seem to be coming apart. I sincerely wish people in these places think of constructive solutions to their problems rather than expecting the rest of India to bear their cross. With its huge population, why can't a city like Lucknow create jobs like Delhi, or even Hyderabad? It is amazing that with such vast resources at their disposal, the people of these states have to crowd into Mumbai, Delhi, and nowadays even the South to make a living. This is putting needless pressure on other parts of the country.

Provincialism

Our system has permitted such leaders to utter divisive language for their vote bank politics.
Actually speaking, Mumbai is in Maharashtra, but it shows a mixed culture. Every mega city is having a mixed culture today, time is ripe that all these mega citites should have separate Assesmbly, nothing to do with the main State, their problems are different,

Real problem is population boom
by Ram Sharma on Mar 19, 2008 06:14 PM  Permalink

The real problem of MUMBAI as well as that of the country is population boom, for which no one seems to b any longer bothered. In 1947 the combined population of India, Pakistan and B'desh was 33 crores. Now only our population is about 105 crores. Whereas the land and all other natural resources r same as before. They r limited. In addition to increase in population, the per capita fuel and power consumption is also increasing very fast. All this has caused vast degradation of natural resources. Water and air have got polluted. Sub soil water table has gone down everywhere. There was no bottled water 15 years ago, but due to pollution, bottled water is becoming a norm. Roads of all big and small towns r jammed with traffic. Forest land is getting depleted. Many plant and animals r getting extinct. Global warming is taking place.

The solution is forcefully enforcing one child norm on the lines of China. Had China not done so, there would have been a few crore more people on the earth.

Most of the religious leaders, Muslims, Christians, Hindus etc, foolishly ask people of their religion to have more children. It is catastophic. They should know that God and Nature do not distinguish on the basis of religion.

education and hardwork

I agree that Education and Hard work is necessary incase of UP and Bihar upliftment. But the prime factor is that attitude of UP and Bihari people must change more than to blame the politician.

You're right. Rather than voting for caste, people should think of casting their votes - intelligently. Instead of pointing fingers at Mumbai and its politicians, the politicians of these states should reflect on their own contribution to these states, and India.

I fully agree with you. I have worked with many North Indians, and obviously they are always missing home, but they are helpless in bringing any social & economical reforms in their own state due to rigidity of the society.

You talk like you come from a rich state. Remember, minus Mumbai and Pune, Maharashtra is no better than Bihar or UP. Always remember that residents of Marathwada and Vidarbha region are also part of so called developed state of Maharashtra. So, if Mumbai is left to Maharashtrians, it would be no better than any Amarawati or some other town in the region.

Nobody has called outsiders to come to Mumbai. People don't come to Maharashtra so that they can help Maharashtra progress. They come here to get 2 times food and safety of life which is not there in UP/Bihar. Stay there if you want and don't bother what happens in Maharashtra. People won't just survive but thrive without all the new migrants ...
