Sickening!
by Suddhaseel Sen on Jun 16, 2008 05:48 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

That's the only way one can describe most of the reader responses - such deep-seated prejudice, such unthinking parroting of the same ideas! God knows when we will change, if at all!

Reading some of the comments is making me sick. People who do not fully know the issue surrounding Dr.Sen are simply trying to tarnish his image. I do understand that in today's media hungry world nobody is spared. Here is a person who is in detention for more then one year without being found guilty.Without politisizing the whole issue just think about it. Here is a man who practised medicine for more then 30 years in one of the most backward regions in our country.People should visit the places he had served and talk to the people to know the truth rather then mudslinging his personality. The nobel laurettes are not fools to endorse this personality. It is sad that he has now become a victim of politics.

John Mukala,
Imagine this scenario, a person serves needy and downtrodden people for 50 years but is arrested for murder and abetment. Should this person be freed of his murder charges just because he served the needy people for 50 years?

Responsible Journalism is need of the hour
by Dhorabh on Jun 16, 2008 04:27 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Good marks to rediff for publishing this article. The web site was lost in publishing latest fashion trends and cricket news like our famous private news channels that the word resposible journalism seemed an oxymoron.

Well done to highlight Dr Sen's human rights abuse by the government that claims to be democratic. As more and more such atrocities are commited by government forces and power multinational corporations in need of land and "flexible-laws" for "free-market", responsible journalism would be required to defeat the imperilistic aims of these investors.

Shame on the country for abusing human rights.

Why these human rights activest keep silence when the Naxlites were desrupting the power supplies in Bastar for a week this time and for almost 10 days last. Why they are not seeing the sufferings of common people of Bastar.

All these duffers will protest Salwa Judum (movement by locals to save themselves from the tyranny and oppression of naxal leftie filth) but will not say a word against Naxal terrorism. They are fighting for Naxal liberties not for common man's liberties.

Sam,

Does a state like chattisgarh have funds to train and equip its police with AK 47, bullet proof vests and intellegence personal?
.
its only resource is Salwajudum.
,
When J&K can Village defence officials then why cant salwa judum exist,
.
the main aim of Maoists is to destroy the tribals and thier culture.

you are saying govt cannot protect its citizens simply because it doesnt have funds ...Really sad ...you have funds for evreything But not for protecting its citizens. Kashmir is different ..its terrorist from outside support and moreover army is at standby . you cannot draw paralel between these two.Naxilms breeds where there are fuedal elements..states like BIHAR,AP ,MP ,CHTISGARH ,UP, why doesnt it breed in kerala, gujrat or Karnataka or TN

kerala cannot have maoists prob because they rule there.
.
naxals are terrorist born here but bred by the pittance of china and bengals
.
goin by ur logic the maoists must be killing the chowdrys/sahookars etc.
.
they are killing police, women, blowing stations.
.
how are they getting latest arms, they dont have money to live but have money to buy latest weapons.

bring land reforms.you cannot solve naxalism through barrel of gun .be pragmatic and innovative in your approach otherwise you are going to creat another issue of huge proportion .Itw ill divide the society as so amny rural areas are effected by droughts and sloppy govt programmes ..Change your attitude towards poor in this country.

Sam,
Police cannot sit outside every person's house. Salwa Judum is a response by the common man on the tyrannical oppression of Naxalites who rape, murder, maim, loot, kidnap and harass common man daily. Keep one thing in mind, naxalism and liberation theology are going to eat dust, no power can stop this from happening.

It is a tragedy
by john santosh murala on Jun 16, 2008 04:10 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is an irony that on one hand India is forging ahead as a super power and on the other hand you hear of gross human rights voilation. Dr.Sen who was a gold medalist from CMC vellore has chosen a path which very few doctors choose.Having worked in a rural hospital for two years I do understand the challenges faced by medical professionals in these areas.Dr.Sen has devoted his entire life for the upliftment of the downtrodden. It is a difficult life. For those who sit in air conditioned offices it is difficult to understand the challenges of being a doctor in rural India. It is an irony that people like Kiran Bedi, Dr.Binayak sen etc have been recognised for their contributions outside of India... Many in India have never heard of Dr.Sen who but he has been an inspiration for many students to give up their lucrative urban lifestyle and serve in rural India. I have a strong faith in our constitution and I hope justice will prevail. We need to encourage doctors like Dr.Sen which will help more medical graduates to work in Rural India.
