British built part of Mumbai not flooded

by Rahul Kulkarni on Jul 01, 2008 03:41 PM  Permalink
Exactly. On the Western line there is no water logging till Mahim and on the Central line there is no water logging till Sion starts. Mumbai was officially till these limits and well devloped by Britishers. Our corrupt politicians and administrators have grown Mumbai exponentially without caring about proper drainage and sewage facilities. The political parties fund-raisers, the builders have made the situation much worse by dumping the construction waste however and wherever they want. Mumbaikars are famous for their resilience and time and again their resilience is stretched to unbelievable limits at the expense of corrupt and useless politicians who warm their behinds in A/C offices with people's money. May be the British built the excellent infrastructure for their own comfort but we have to take notice of that. 100 year old bridges in Mumbai are still as strong as before but a year old bridge already has more potholes than craters on the moon. Its a shame indeed

Thackarey Response
by Yash Bhatnagar on Jul 01, 2008 12:43 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

North Indians are responsible. Not the corrupt politicians and council people. Not the goonda raaj and petty self serving bureaucrats - it is the Indians from North India.
This happens in Mumbai nearly every year - where is the foresight, planning, infrastructure to deal with this situation. The whole machinery breaks down.

You are an idiot Veejay. Last time I checked Mumbai was a part of India and any Indian should be allowed to settle in any part of India. I being the Bhatnagar - what an open mind you have. North Indian might be blocking the drainage but you definitely do belong in the sewerage.

You should grow up and as far as mumbai is concern ,city is gud but some people like u makes it dirty...that is the reason why rain is coming like this every year..

K, Vineit... Granted that those who critize Mumbai rains go over the top... Granted that there are no roads and no electricity, no water to drink in those places... But even if they stop complaining this very instant, will it improve the situation in Mumbai? Question is... why do we Mumbaikars (though I'm not a Maharashtrian, I've stayed here long enough to call Mumbai my home with pride and it aggrieves me, too, when others criticize Mumbai), have to go through this every monsoon? Why does the BMC make tall promises at the onset of every monsoon and don't learn even when they have to eat their words every year? What have we got in return for the maximum amount of tax money paid? Simple things like rain harvesting can contain the water problem as well as play a role in limiting the havoc caused by the rains... One will be surprised as to how simple and cost-effective rain harvesting can be... (just google it and you'll find it)... If we are proud of Mumbai, let's show it by constructive means... We'll see who dares to criticize Mumbai after that!

i have lived in London and zurich. the rain problems is as severe there as it is in mumbai. I remember northeast eastern U.K been cut off for 7 days last year. 3 years ago, in similar condition I was stuck at zurich airport for 6 hours. the population there is much less and drainage systems much better. the problem is not the BMC its the immigrants who come - litter (read block drains) and make a hoolah of the situation. Yesterday I was lookingfor a rickshaw, but no on of my so called bihari, bhaiya brothers were willing to help me out as they would not get a return fare.(atleast a dozen rickshaws and i was drenching) its only after I slapped one did he agree to take me to my destination.
