Can't even discuss
by Telugu Aryan on Feb 15, 2008 06:45 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I can't even discuss my work related issues with my parents because I fear that it might add to their stresses. So I generally keep my mouth shut or tell blatant lies to paint a rosy picture in front of them.

No girl friend. No friends who are really close. Yeah, with colleagues sometimes I speak frankly. Counselors only give lectures. Not really useful.

Aren't you the nut who also posts hate speech regularly on Rediff? I guess that is your outlet. Good job! I don't see you committing suicide anytime soon thanks to your stress reliever.

Pity.

If you are influenced with hate speech, then the problem is with you not me. If you want me to commit suicide, once again the problem is with you, not me. Good luck and look at your own name before you talk about others.

''Its a rat race, even if you win, you are still a rat''
by Vishwas/Jeff on Feb 15, 2008 06:32 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Sometimes in pursuit of money, people forget to realize that God gave this life to enjoy and not to constantly worry about money and materialistic pleasures.
I would not blame this on western culture, in USA very rarely you will find cases of educated people committing suicide. Its the hopelessly poor and depressed people (also drug addicts, criminals) who commit suicide in USA. Indians do not know when to stop. We get into the rat race from the high school, its competition for score, then its competition for getting into IIT, IIM then competition for landing a good job. Competition is not a bad thing but people should know their limitations. Maximum students in junior colleges dream of becoming engineers or doctors, and parents also force their children so much. My parents never forced their dreams on me, I performed badly in 12th but they still supported me and let me take my own time, today I am successful in the profession I chose and even earning at par with my classmates who got admission in top engineering and medical colleges (I have nothing to brag abt it) Its just that people should not compete with others and run like crazy in the rat race, Engineering and medicine are not the last professions on earth, students should explore the different career options. But when these pretenders finally become doctors and engineers (with hard work of course) they find it hard to cope with their profession when they realize that they are not fit for d job

Whoa ! This is gross generalization about Indians which I believe is not accurate. Competition is good which is what helped us Indians to make a mark in the IT world.

But your point about worrying too much about material things is quite valid. People who are stressed out should realize that the right way to face stress or other problems is to fix the root cause i.e. reduce stress in one's life (physical exercise, eating well, etc) and solve one's problems.

The is stress is not basically coz u r not fit.....I have known ppl who r so damn brilliant and r still stressed with work...esp in Engg field.... coz u r solving major issues or scientific break throughs and there is no time and quick deadlines....well thats life in this part of the world....but yes one needs to know that we have ONE LIFE and in that life can have MANY JOBS..... so the primary priority in ur life should be ur health .... physically/emotinally and mentally..... there is a breaking point in every persons life....lets not streatch too much and know who too slow down or stop...... The truth is no matter who we r today but 15 to 20 yrs down the lane we r pretty much on the same page...retired...with family and friends...so lets invest in future too ...work is 8hrs(in 24 hr) day which is 1/3 of our life....we shouldnt make 2/3 of our life misserable just coz of 1/3 of what we do....Let WORK be WORK and LIFE BE LIFE....a successful person is not one who has lotsa money or has the highest post or for that matter ppl around him with no cash in his pocket....a successfull person is one who knows how to balance his life well and is successful both in 1/3 ie his/her career (doesnt matter what it is...) and 2/3 his/her personal life.... and I think we should all remember this and relax not just run all the time...take time to breath...take vacation revitalize urself

A little price of progress
by Minto on Feb 15, 2008 06:14 AM  Permalink

This is to be expected. The culture of high tech isolates young people from their families and roots. They do not have any social life. They have high salary, cars and apartments but no one to talk to or get emotional support from.

When I read this, felt amused. IT folks being stressed? Wow. When did this happen. They are the arrogant bunch who think that money is everything. And they show off big time. And the wives of the IT husbands are out of control. Its the IT people who have got the real estate market in Blore out of control. No wonder they are stressed when they think abt EMIs.

please understand that IT has been instrumental in shaping India's now booming economy before you utter such nonsense. besides the ones who are making lots of money are working hard for it and not getting it in charity.

An economy cannot be strong and booming unless there is a very strong Manufacturing and Agricultural sector, the sooner we realise this the better for us, it will also reduce the growing divide between the haves and have nots.

How do you know that he cannot afford a good life style??,lol... and you talk about stupid assumptions

what exactly is good life style to you?, is it just good salary, anyways...... going through this article and the unbelievably intelligent comments I can make out that in India (these days) the only reason a person is respected is depending on how much money he's got, forget morals, forget principles and ofcourse, forget decency.

It is nothing but natural.... Growing individualism and isolation from family is leading to every-man-for-himself kind of an attitude. Money is an obvious fall-back on as it helps people indulge in their interests and make them feel happy and valuable.
It happened in west 50-100 years ago but gradually. Problem with India is that it is happening now and very fast so we don't know how to handle it.

I had been through that in US. If any one of you have these symptoms, plz bring you cholestrol level down as soon as possible and catch-up on vitamins and iron. Fruits help a lot. Relax atleast for few minutes before sleep by deep breathing. Fill your house with lots of comedy movies. Save as much money as possible even at the cost of being called 'miser'. Whenever you are happy remind yourself that suicide is not an option even when you don't have any options. Dipression is one of the withdrawal symptoms for alcohol, drugs cigarrettes and anything that pushes you high while feeding on fat and drops you down.

It was a suicide city even in the 80s
by --- on Feb 15, 2008 03:44 AM  Permalink

There were reports in newspapers in the 80s too about Bangalore being the suicide city. Most of them were due to failed love affair. At that time, the blame was on the mixing of cultures and languages. Now it seems to be on stress and IT and BPO

Everyone wants a luxurious life and follows a fast the philosophy of going western way. After all we have pay back something. You can't get everything at the same time.
And one has to understand when you go beyond your spending limits, it will definitely being you a lot of worries. In India everything is at sky rocking price. We must weigh our valet before spending and this is the biggest worry for most of the high tech professionals. There is no job guarantee and this increases their stress level multi folds.
