Instead of one, when two sperms enter the egg, twins are born. Sometimes a single fertilized egg divides itself into two to give rise to two identical twins. In Lakshmi's case the twin, that were to be born, was short of development and mearged into Lakshmi. I wonder if such cases could be detected earlier, right at that time, when the child is still in her mother's womb. There have been cases where two cojoined twins are born with one brain. Imagine having to separate twins from their brains! Almost to say, one must survive at the cost of the other!
