Brahminical hegemony is hitting the last nail in the coffin of Hinduism in Kerala. Kerala is a state where the population of hindus are ever diminishing. Almost 60 % of the population is already Christians and Muslims. The 40% hindus consist of backwards who are mostly communists and thus rationalists who don't believe in god. The hindu funds in the form of offerings from the temples go to govt which is run by the communists. The communist govt and the temple minister are hell bent on taking the money out of the temple for various reasons. Apart from the missionary conversions there are many individuals including the intellectuals who are converting to other religions like the famous poetess Kamala Das converting to Islam. Hinduism in kerala in fast on the vain and Acts like this will make it even faster. The Ezhavas are one of the most %u2018foraward%u2019 backward communities of India like the %u2018Yadavas%u2019. They are a progressive and hard working lot. Most of these Ezhavas converted to Christianity in the early 19th century. Most of today%u2019s Christian population in Kerala are Ezhava converts.

The conversion was mainly because of the money. Lure of Gulf jobs made many to convert to Islam. Free food and medical treatment with help of American/European mone made many to take up Christianity. It has nothing to do with faith/relegion. It is just business and marketing .

But the facts remain FACTS. There does exist lot of untouchablity in hinduism and among hindus. You cannot ignore the darkness by just closing your eyes.
The first one is saying Nair and Namboodthiri, both aare matriarchal, which is not the case. Namboothiri, the Kerala Brahmin follows Patriarchism.
The second one is saying Guruvayoorappan is an avatar of Lord Krishna. He is not considered as avtar of Krishna, but Krishna himself, more specifically Krishna as an infant.
And the third is Ravi saying the whole issue is because he is of backward caste Ezhava. The issue was his wife being Christian and Hindu Temples in Kerala does'nt allow non hindus to enter temple premises. So his son was not considered a Hindu because his mother was Christian.
Ravi has every right to feel aggrieved but being a responsibe citizen and a leader of status he should not distort facts ang give it a casteist colour. Especially in Kerala's background where casteism is not at all prevelant.
And besides all Guruvaayoor Temple gets frequent terrorist threats. Allowing any Tom Dick and Haarry to the centureis old shrine is non acceptable.
And temples in Kerala adhere to strong rituals like not allowing people to have non veg food and go inside it. Non Hindus won't adhere to such strict regimen.
In the first place why did Mr.Ravi go to the temple. He could have done it elsewhere or even at home. Will God bless only if you go to temple? dont understand why people go knowingly and still complain.

Vayalar Ravi need not have invoked his caste as the reason for the cleansing ceremony. Millions of Ezhava Hindus have had their feeding ceremony and other worships there. No complaints of any untouchability practice. The conservative priests might have factored the Christian connection of Ravi's family, for the punyaham. I don't think otherwise the Temple top brass would have annoyed a Central Minister and his family. Anyway, this will change with time. But no keralite takes this as an insult to Ezhavas; it is a rare case and it is praiseworthy that Ravi brought up his children strictly under the Hindu Culture. He should not feel hurt in this. There is sympathy for him and the tantris need to answer the rationale of their decision, with solid proof, some day.

Actually Ezhava is not backward class in kerala but nowadays everybody want to become backward class becuase of it is a good market in indian politics.

All religions has issues, buddy. Muslims hasn't documented it. See the sect based violence in Iraq. Islam is famous for Shia-sunni conflicts, throughout the history. Religion/Caste/sect created God. Not the other way around.

Zaheen, I do agree with you on the issue of Hindu untouchability policy, though I believe ground realities are getting better daily.
Islam does seem to have divisions, sunnis and shias. Besides I don't think women are treated on-par with men in many forms of Islam. For example, I seem to have read somewhere that there was no woman mentioned by name in Quran saving Mary . Why wasn't there even one woman prophet in Quran?

Zaheen, I understand that. Let's not get into an argument on which is worse. There was a time when there was Sati (I believe this is a lot of time back) and infanticide (due to dowry problem which was widespread a little while back, but going down surely) here.
Reading Quran is obviously not practical. I tried both Quran and Bible. The language is so different and the books so thick and obviously, no insult intended, boring (I would say the same about many Hindu books too).
Anyway, coming back to Islam, I still think the plight of women needs a lot of improvement. It does look quite depressing from outside and also I still think they are giving enough importance and surely not equal rights (I saw somewhere they used equity and not equality). But I think women should have a right to do what they want, wear what they want and whatever else just like guys. And we must admit the theology of Islam has no place for women as prophets. Don't you think that we'll need improvement there?
