i cant select... i hv fav song in his every album 1. Yeh jo des (Swades) 2. Aye ajnabi (Dil Se) 3. Roobaroo (RDB) 4. Haji Ali (Fiza) 5. Khwaja (Jodha Akbar) 6. Uyirum neeye 7. Munbe vaa (Jillenu oru kadhal) 8. Azhake sugama (Parthale paravasam) 9. Meharbaan (Ada) 10. Vellaipookkal(Kannathil Muthamittal) 11. Dil se re (Dil se) 12. Kadhal Rojave (Roja) 13. Jaage (Guru) 14. Bombay Thmeme (Bombay) 15. Only you (vande mataram) 16. Tu hi re (Bombay) 17. O Vennila (Kadhal desham) 18. Thenrale (Kadhal Desham) 19. Pachai nirame (Alaipayuthe)
One of my all time favorites is the song Khamosh Raat sung by Roop Kumar Rathod for the film Thakshak...superb composition...unfortunatley didnt get the credit its due..there are a no of beautiful songs in a no. of other movies which didnt become popular because of the popularity of some other songs in the same movie..no one talks of Manmohini morey or Zindagi from Yuvraaj...almost all songs of Netaji SCBose went unnoticed despite a brilliant soundtrack...Nahin samne from Taal was not as popular when the album was released... another trait i noticed among the Hindi speaking public is that though they love, adore and respect Rahman they prefer to listen to more of HR, Vishal Shekar, Pritam varieties.. the proof i have is our great FM channels where they sing high praises of Rahman and play Mindblowing Mahiya on a loop...
-> evano oruvan vaasikkiran from alay payudhe. -> kandugonden kandukonden --> all songs. ->taal... roja... Bombay... minsaara kanavu... jeans.... lagaan... Rang de basanthi... dil se.. pukar... God!!!... i cant list them up... the list is endless!!!!
It's a very tough task to distill few best songs as one after other keeps pouring out of mind. Producing some good music is no less an achievement, but Rahman's range and breadth is mind-boggling and his songs compete with each other vying for attention.
We must admire that Rahman's Hindi songs have been nominated by Oscar committee in mainstream despite lyrics being in foreign language. It's ironical that Rahman's brilliant Tamil compositions do not become a hit within India in the same spirit, unless it's copied in Hindi. (Many of those have been re-written in Hindi but they lose their charm due to not-so-great lyrics or sometimes in awkward translation).
I would list the following as some of Rahman's best going by my taste:
1. New York Nagaram (Chillunu Oru Kadhal) 2. Kannalanae (Bombay) 3. Anda Arabi Kadaloram (Bombay) 4. Chale Chalo (Lagaan) 5. Dost (Yuvraaj) 6. Endrendrum Punnahai (Alaipayuthe) 7.Pachhai Niramae (Alaipayuthe)

I would appreciate if you develop your sense of music. Ilayaraja comes with some good tunes no doubt but his music range and repertoire is limited and sometimes struggles with music.
Rahman is beyond a comparison in his music range. Plus see the scores of new divine voices that he introduced over years and the repeats that Ilayaraja did with SPB and Janaki.

The history of tamil music has evolved like all good things.....from Vishwanathan/Ramamoorthy....to M S Vishwanathan....to Ilayaraja.....ARR. What a treasure trove of gems!!! Everyone one of the above took the tamil film music to its then pinnacle!!! Let us just enjoy the music rather than comparing the incomparable! Each one of the above composers were doyens during their prime!! My CD cabinet has more than 500 cds of their compositions and still seems inadequate!

Mr. Bharadvaj, you have to look one thing, at that time there are no persons willing to sing in the movies, now the youths are started and were trained to sing in movies. Even in Hindi the singers are Uditnarayan, Kailash Kher, and one are two are working. There are lots and lots of talented singers in tamil now.
There is no repetition in Ilayaraja's music in any of his movies, he was the first person to introduce seperate tunes for Background music. But Ar rahman uses the song tunes in background music. Yuvan also do his best in introducing good tunes even for Background music. Even Harris Jeyaraj is doing good in Background music.
I think you have not watched the movies with music of Ilayaraja in Tamil, that's you are not capable of comparing two legends in Music.
