I am sure the writer is aware that Rahman primarily scored for tamil cinema before his movie with Mani Ratnam, Roja, was dubbed in Hindi. Even after Roja, he scores for Hindi films were restricted to hindi films made by south indian film makers, like RGV for Rangeela etc. Its only after so called master film makers like Subhash Ghai( !!!) etc roped him that he started getting noticed in Bollywood. Bollywood, meanwhile, were happy with the Nadeem Shravans and Anu Maliks of the world. Its another matter altogether than Rahman paved the way later for new age music makers like Pritam, Vishal Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy etc, etc. In a sense, infact in al lot of sense, Rahman is responsible to briging in a new sound to Indian film music.

Roja was first movie of AR Rahman. Before Roja was dubbed in Hindi, Rahman did Tiruda Turuda and Gentleman...Infact Gentleman song in Tamil started selling in Calcutta before the release of Roja in Hindi...Prabhu Deva and Chikku Bikku Railey was a rage at that time...and most of my non south indian friends were surprised when they heard Roja's melodiuos songs...they had assumed that AR Rahman was a purely a music director who could compose western music only like Bappi Lahiri and Biddu...and in those days for any of my friends dance parties AR Rahman music was must along with all Englis POP numbers.....
