I think IITs should have two options - one set of seats for self financed candidates who bear the cost of their education themselves and should be free to go wherever they like; second set should have the government bear the cost of their education but should be made to sign a bond that they will work for at least a certain time period for some government department
It is not he indian nostalgia and allure of home rather a kick in the Ass for these Indians in America. In case of retrenchements abroad the first people to lose jobs are Indians, they carry the same slave mentality of unquestioning obedience and hence are least respected, I have seen this personally. Heard of the number of indians losing out on wall street jobs because of subprime, the above examples are just these. Case of sour grapes
These guys left India because lack of in-house opportunities. US corporations feed them temporary happiness and took away all the patents they invented. Indian Technology graduates working in US Investment Banking firms to earn money for US treasury. India invested 10 fold in US market than US in India during last 10 years. Govt. of India is investing more than Rs.50 Lakh/ head and in return they are investing their most productive time for US companies. Now they are coming back either because of retrenchment or to earn in $ terms from India only. If they get opportunity to work for Sovereign Wealth Fund of China, tomorrow they will jump on it. Actually they are looking for a temporary benefit. This short-term attitude will leave them nowhere. They only look forward to get benefited at the cost of a quarter billion starved Indians.
I hate these guys.
India now has lots of opportunity for this so called talented grads. IITs should sign bond to force them to work for India at least for 10 years. Ofcourse there should be sponsored seats as well, for the students not willing to sign bonds. MNCs should sponsor seats and hire grads. This will create more seats in IITs.
Why should India invest in them to get back nothing?

I agree with Randeep Das. I work in New York and some of my friend left for India. Because In early 2000 when Intel moved to India Intel gave them great incentive to work in India. One of my friend in IBM went to India because IBM agreed to give him 60 lakh/month(this is a fact not guess) which was more than what a Sr. Project Manager earns in US in $terms. Only difference he had to manage 4 big project at same time/14 hour per day work schedule. Now it is FINANCE BECAUSE, sub prime crisis shut down BEAR STERNS, CITI, has cut 13,000 employees,Merril Lynch about 1000, Deutsche Bank about 1600, numerous Hedge Fund who were on the wrong side of sub prime have gone belly up. Recently my friend from Bear Stern with Phd. in Finance has take a huge salary cut and joined Lehman Brother at lower post. CONCLUSION: These are true reason they are coming back.

Rubbish..India is reaping the benefits of the Brand our intellectuals have created over the years in US.They proved that Indians are among the best brains.Millions of us in India should be thankful to them.
Interesting... so all of these people also worked only in Management or Finance... no tech? How about asking people working in tech (and no, I do not refer to Software/IT - something like Civil Engg or Chemical Engg) whether they want to return to India
Friends, When the country needed them (their beloved sons/ IIT'ians) most and invested heavily on their studies, they flew to US to cherish their personal dreams and ambitions. Now when those who stayed back in the country, strived hard for several decade to bring the country to this respectable level, these people want to return back to Enjoy the fruits and become Big bosses.
The second Major Reason for their returning is the massive reternchment drive going on in USA...which is making these Desh Bhakts come back (Sons of the Soil)..
UBS Bank is Retrenching 12000 Employees in US and Europe. Citigroup is Retrenching 15000 Employees in US and Europe. Philips is Retrenching 5000 Employees in Europe. Out of top Fortune 500 MNC's 50% are Retrenching their Employees.

It is not their fault. Man always wants to go where he can be prosperous and that is the way it should be. In the 50s and 60s people who did business were rediculed and looked down upon. Tatas and dalmias were harrased by government and treated like criminals by communists like Dange. Nehru created IIts but did not do anything about starting trade schools for the masses and encouraging private initiative. No body is a saint including Gandhi and Nehru who went to England for greener pastures. Only when Brits ill ttreated them they got their enlightenment.

So well said buddy.. you are a true GEM !!! Like your clarity of words and presentation
In India you can not get emergency attended by fire brigade pera medics in three minutes, ambulance within 10 minutes and the near perfect healthcare. Police is friend of law abiding citizens and terror to criminals in USA while police is feared by law abiding citizens and befriended even collaborated with police by criminals.Only after getting US citizenship some returns for family reasons
The author really portrayed rosy picutre of Reverse Brain drain..But just citing example of two IIT individulas won't prove his point. There has always been brain drain and it is ever increasing.Yes things back home are improving but not sufficient to curb the brain drain..
Look at Gujarat, where almost every collegian or school pass out hopes to settle down in US,Aus or NZ.Look at what young girls aspire ?? They aspire to marry with NRI ...All these leads to the fact that the reverse brain drain is not that true..Yes there are few instances here and there but it is very minute compared to over all numbers of exodus.
