The US sucks - sorry Matthew
by sushi on May 19, 2008 10:17 PM  | Hide replies

I have lived most of my life in the UK, and am now happily settled in Paris. I like the French (and the Dutch and the Italians and even the Germans). The one place I cannot stand is the US - filled with the loudest, dullest people on the planet. Count fattest also - obscenely fat. I stayed in Chicago for a bit, New York for a year, and in middle America (boring small towns) for a while. Chicago and New York are OK while Middle America is - words fail me here. I would choose Alcatraz to middle America.

The US is an ugly, obscene illustration of the problem of plenty. Its people are boring, trite, silly, and have an amazingly exaggerated sense of self. Have you seen the comedy shows in their churches? And I hate that ugly twang of an accent with all my heart.

For all you guys coming back to India, lets be clear - you are not coming back to security or quality of life. You are really coming back to an exciting place, a place where you can feel alive. I look forward to the time I come back to the great, vibrant country and participate in nation building.

Its good to hear that u wish to come to india though u r well settled in Paris.
Actually i think that 90% of the people go to US only for earning higher money and India looses its talent............

Let's see, what have the French got to be proud of? 35 hour weekdays and 2 hour lunches, taking worker productivity to new lows, Labour Unions taking tight grip on industry, making job protection their priority and taking unemployment to new highs ( Maybe that is why the French peasant has all that time to talk to you ) so much so that the likes of Mittals have to rescue Arcelor, banning ethnic clothes ( turban row etc).. the list goes on .. As for the fat part, yes , I agree, French fries are the worst culprits in contributing to obesity and should be banned everywhere.

To add: I am sorry to deal with general statements here. I have some great American friends. The trouble with America is that the average intellect, pulled down by 90% morons, is only supported by 10% super-smart people.

You can have a great conversation with a Dutch farmer, a French peasant, an Italian mechanic.
But in America, you need to sidestep with their racism and secessionist tendencies first (I am talking Texas here). And for the art of small talk diarrhoea without saying anything at all, the sublime talent of broadcasting your dinner talk to the whole restaurant, look no further than the average American.

The biggest genius of America is to assimilate every race , creed, religion - they become one in the one true giant melting pot. Americans do not take them selves as seriously as Europeans do, and they are much better for it. I work in Silicon Valley with some of the smartest people I have ever known , and found them to be downright humble, witty and very tolerent and accepting. Try that in Europe. Americans have had a two black Secretary of States, one black Chief of Staff, and potentially a super smart Harvard educated, first black President! Try THAT in Europe any time soon. I could go on and on about their spirit of innovation, enterprise, etc etc, but I will only say that the true greatness and genius of a nation is shown when the lowest denominator of its society can truly rise to such heights, given the opportunity. The US has shown that in far greater measure than any other country, Europe can only start to work on that ideal once it starts coming down from its high horse.
You, for one, need to acquire greater understanding of what these two disparate cultures are all about, it will serve you well to put more analysis into your words, other wise they will be just that - words with no substance at all, just juvenile rants.

You guys are Craazy

How can you guys be so brain dead and talk like this about fellows who returned. I exactly know the thought process of these guys who came back. I was there for 8yrs. Granted i earned some, but i was not in any job loss pressure. I worked with a FED client and the project just goes on and on. Still i came back, because honesly, nothing is as sweet as being in my home country than anything. It hot, its traffic and there is pollution and i still love my city. Infact i adore my city. So stop false acquisitions and lay it off.

It took 8 years for you to realize that there's nothing sweeter than being at home ! Wow !.
You think you missed those years of your life ?

Dude, I'm one of those who flocked back home too, but I'm rather honest. It took a few years for me to realize that I can make that kind of money (Actually more than that) back home, risking less.

I dont understand why people have difficulty in accepting the fact that everyone is opportunistic ! Then the nostalgia, and patriotism and all that nonsense. Nostalgia and Patriotism etc are good feelings when you hear Pankaj Udhas performing 'Chitti Aayi Hein' live in NJ.

Brain Drain
by DON on May 19, 2008 11:58 AM  | Hide replies

This is not love of the countrty, only that their asses are being kicked, due to job cust in USA. They now wish to return to India, thinking themselves as foreign return, and wish to occupy job positions. I am sure they will soon run away, as soon as they get a better option from abroad. These can at best be seen as migratory birds.

very correct, when they got an opportunity, threy were they first to leave India, and when they have got pink slip or being kicked or sidetracked, suddenly home become sooo sweeeet that they came here only to enjoy the benefits and luxuries of India now offer. They are nothing but opportunist to me.

yes, most of this brain drain phenomena and reverse brain drain is ooportunism. we should look up to those who stayed back in India inspite of having the talent and opportunity to go abroad. They are the real heroes, although unknown.

how can u guys be so short sighted? did India flush all the forex that Indians from abroad sent back? I'm sure all that forex transformed into student loans, new business loans etc.. that was one of the reasons for fueling India's growth. Now you enjoy that forex-fueled growth by not having to go to the U.S to make money

U turn of Reverse brain drain
by Zhakas Bhidu on May 19, 2008 10:39 AM  | Hide replies

will be seen as soon as the over-hyped Indian economy slows down. Investing banking - is that a real job? what real substance this produces? It just moves the money around. It doesn't create real product or job. Only hypes the economy and makes life of hard working Indians more difficult.

Instead of covering the self-consumed, opportunistic, green-card dreaming IITians, media should cover many dedicated, unsung heros of NGOs. There are many of them who are working for years and years without any recognition.

What brain does banking require?
If a person working in a bank, contributes to "brain drain", we can send so many overstaffed bank employees to US!

Brilliant analysis! Instead of welcoming IITians who have the technical expertise to take India to the next level into a developing country... you talk about NGOs who don't create wealth but need "investment money" from the same engineers, bankers etc. that you so envy... Yes sir... Spite the golden goose...

Absolute Nonsense !!
by pickaxe on May 19, 2008 10:18 AM  | Hide replies

Yet another India-Shining farce !
First of all, I dont understand why these IIT-IIM news is somuch on hype? There are plenty of other well-to-do people in India, including designers, Architects and the likes.
Ok. Now, there are these IITians who burn the govt cash at a premium priced education, do their computer science stuff, stay patriotic, miss dhal-chawal and bollywood music, go abroad, and work for 'Investment Banking' ! And then the Morgan Stanleys and the likes see another growing market in the world, and get there. Whom else they can resort on other than the brownskins they have onboard ? (A known devil is better than an unknown, rare-to-find angel in Indian job market) I couldnt draw any honest links to patriotism or 'reverse braindrain' except for some natural (And nothing wrong with it. Everyone is opportunistic) opportunistic acts. My problem is when the story is woven with some patriotism and 'yes, we're indians..clap clap clap' sort of ending.
I returned from US last year, and I was a total opportunist. I could see opportunities of saving and doubling my investments in India in a shorter span than in the US, and I'm riding all those hype waves (knowingly) of Realty, Construction, consulting, retailing and art. I know my money is doubling every year, which I cant dream in the US or Europe !
India shining is a hype than reality. There is GDP growth, there is employement opportunity. But they're ephemeral. One down-turn, you'll see a reverse-reverse braindrain

Dude,
I feel there is nothing wrong in the hype created around IIT-IIM news as many of them are among those who have created so called opportunities and good reason for wealth and present situation of India is in. They have show cased india in many aspects and mind you they all started from zero. Really dont agree with point that IITians burn the govt cash and work for some market outside, presently 60 % of them stick to india and get them involved with the development here, good number of them are into NGO's, bureacracy etc.

I absolutely agree with the fact that its just not the patriotism they are heading back to india, but many of them personally I know came back and left they hefty pays and comfort life there just to do something for the country. So just dont think everyone is coming back just to be cash in the booming market around.
