Not strong enough to fight it out
by abhisek bhaduri on May 15, 2008 12:22 PM

Plz. don't get into the thought that India as a country or even the growth of Indian economy is pulling these IITians back to India. Even with a slow economy, the dollar to rupee ratio stands quite substantial even today.... The main point is that every IITian is not axcessively intelligent or has the calibre to prove themselves in situations of challenge and adversity, and believe me this comes from personal experience after working with quite a few of them and realizing the myth that every IITian is extraordinarily gifted...

So, its very clear... the ones who had the calibre to fight it out and survive or even thrive are still there.... the ones who did not have the fire in them to face challenge lost out or got retrenched and just fled back...its got nothing to do with reverse brain drain... its simply a phenomenon of escapism....

Those who have the guts to refuse lucrative offers after passing out and stick to the country and work here are a different case... but surely not these escapists...

Reverse brain drain .. the true variable
by shibu james on May 15, 2008 12:21 PM

While most of the reasons bandied about here are of some cognizance, they are none the less not the pivotal one. The pivotal reason is this that guys from IIT & IIMs stagnate after a period in time in the US. i.e if they do not have a MBA/MS degree from the IVY LEAGUE colleges. The most these guys can aspire to reach is the middle management levels of US corps without a degree from the top universities.

While a degree from IIT/IIM guarantees a good placement (read cheap labour) in terms of dollar salary, they do not help in career progression in the US & Europe. Some of these guys go on to get additional qualifications and progress, rest retire to India where their qualifications guarantee them "IVY LEAGUE" status.

This brings us to the question - are Indian top league educational institutions sub par to the top institutions globally. The answer sadly is YES. While Indians are good at technical skills, its only this aspect that is reinforced in these premier institutes. Business & enterprise requires others skills like interpersonal skills, entrepreneurship, team skills, risk assessment etc which sadly is not our forte, neither do our college incubate.

Ofcourse the assessment does not speak for every individual case, however generally this holds true.

The the case of reverse brain drain is only a case of unfullfilled aspiration meeting opportunity in India.

Yeah, it was meant to be vestigeal but men used it so much that it went against the "use & disuse" theory....we are more evolved because we lost it.....because we used our time and brains diligently and not busy half the time playing round...

Playing double game
by Sandeep Patwardhan on May 15, 2008 12:10 PM  | Hide replies

IIT ians are returning to India only because now India has shown its mightin econo0mical and military powers. Whet these selfish IITians have done for the country? They studied on the tax payers money and gave their valuable life time to the foreigners, which could have utilized for the upcoming of pors and illeterates. Now as the country's condition is improved they just want to reap the harvest without doing anything .Today if unfortunately the condition reverts these will again go shamelessly to US / UK for more money and lavish life. This is not the patriotism which they were supposed to show after getting the best of education in the country. Since going to US has become extreamly difficult, they have taken the mask of patriotism .Shame on them

You are saying shame on them as if you wld not have done the same were you in thr position. IITians abroad have done a great deal buddy, perhaps its because the efforts of some of these fellows that India is now a force to reckon with. And as per as what they have done for India, there's something called AID (Association for India's Development) which has over 40 chapters in US, all doing tremendous work. Agar aap utna bhi kar lo to desh ki haalat sudhar jaaye.

Sitting in the comforts of one's house, all we do is write hate mssgs on rediff, spit venom and vent out our frustrations. Life is too short for negative thoughts my dear friend, if u are so concerned about how the country is moving, stop cribbing about others over here and get into action.

And one last thing, hate wont lead us anywhere, our past proves how vulnerable we are to divide and rule philosophy, so better have some faith and learn how to stick for one another.

POINT2:Ok you studied and also working in India what you have done for the countries improvement(from your after tax money)....be honest it is nothing.
POINT3:where you studied where you work where you are doesnt matter....what really maters is what you do for your country...

Excellent inference sandeep.... If after 10 yrs Pakistan will become economic power, these IITians will learn URDU and go there for job. In one word you can describe them, SELFISH. They love materialistic life and they value mother nation below their own wishes.

However, there are many IITians who stayed here and giving their 100% for the nation. We must respect them also.

Last but not the least, there are many people who couldn't even made to the IIT campus but are still shining in various sectors to let India grow.

Unbiased look at the scenario
by geela parul on May 15, 2008 11:56 AM  | Hide replies

Unlike in India, you stagnate in USA pretty soon.YOU DON'T GET SUCH SALARY hikes and promotions like in Indian corporates.

So, after sometime people lose motivation to work hard ....so in order to give more meaning to their life they are coming back.

Had money been the factor only....then in dollar conversion they have to be GM of a company to have that salary scale.

So, money is never an incentive to come back.
Anyday they will earn less than that in USA in India.....EXCEPTIONS ARE OF COURSE THERE BUT GENERALLY THEY will not earn...

Dear timepass,
Stop mentioning your blonde inflatable doll...Its called s3x toy, not wife. Unless you are just jerking off (both literally and metaphorically), I'm surprised someone would marry you. And if you don't get my sarcasm, ask an IITian - I'm sure he/she will explain it you.

I I T grads return to India
by Prabhakar Nimgaonkar on May 15, 2008 11:49 AM

Well it is their personal decision - the single most important factor being the opportunities now available here & not so favourable chances in USA.They should realise that they owe a lot to their motherland in addition to their kith & kin as their edu.in IIT was highly subsidised. Each one must ensure the progress of their family,school,college,village/city,community in all possible ways & adopt at least two students preferably orphans/underprevilaged from primary to graduation level.Their focus must be in promotion of edn & est of business concerns. They should project as a ROLE model in their chosen field ,In short wellfare of society which had sacrifised its past & present for their future.Love your mother & motherland in addition to the wealth created by them.Dr.Prabhakar
