reason to go back to india
by karthik on May 16, 2008 04:50 AM

people who do want to go back to india are those who live a desi style of life which is No workout, eating indian sambar and curry instead of bread and who dont camp or hike. Most desis live a sedinitary life and are not prepared for workouts like heavy cleaning, lifitng weights, painting houses.

There is also the family factor, which I have to agree. Many do want to be with their cousins and family.
Now there are jobs too. So its an ideal thing for desis who dont want to give up their curry, rotis and sambar. better than being an alien on planet mars!

reson to come back toindia
by Arijit on May 16, 2008 01:32 AM  | Hide replies

why are these IITians wasting their precious engineering degree to work in investment banking? sounds very stupid!!!..opportunities in India is increasing in back door IT service industry..The reason these guys are coming back are 1) their fear that their children wud end up embracing american culture..2) They want to turn their dollars into rupees..then only they will luk rich .can afford houses n luxuries based on cheap labour(havin servants)...3)their inability to harmonise with the western people...the desis will always group with desis n create lill india everywhere they go..very poor inadaptibility..They tremendously lack socialising skills and cant mix with non desis..I am not telling them to embrace american culture n forget indian culture...

I live abroad( not US) and I will definitely return to India when my children start to grow up..Tenology market is shrinking abroad becos cheaper Indians are brought from India to work abroad or the work is outsourced to cheap labour centres in India. with this trend going I will have to join the cheap labour industry in India to remain in job..I do not come cheap as I did my masters degree from a world renowned univ(far better than these IITs)..buts thats the ill effects that India produced world wide..Even if I have posh housing in India I knw I have to face the filthy environment when i step out..so i will always miss wrkin in developed countries as they provide a million times better quality of life overall

u r right - why ppl come back is a weakness - they have wasted the govt money spent on them - failed to get into prestigious govt jobs - and they do sedentary babu jobs - ones done by chartered accountants or eco post grads - or may be by those with less education here and abroad - also they failed to make it as enterpreneurs - have little engg or tech consultancy - the reasons of their success is simple - shortage of educated ppl in europe and america - ask them if they earned more than a person holding a trade qualification when abroad - in india a technician is paid peanuts - actually its personal achievement of having made their lot better - no social advantage to state or society

This is partial truth, the main reason is money, people went abroad for money and even if they wish to come back they had little opportunity in India that would give them the same amount/facilities. Today its different, India progressing and getting similar amount as if you r in US. If chieldren and culture is problem, it was same before this too and still people opted to stay there in US (or abroad). What has changed over the year is gap between Indian salary and US salary......final truth

sure everyone lives for money that is the truth. and then these guys came to the usa because they were making 50 times the amount they would have made in india. other than that, think about this, these guys are iitians, and what do they end up doing? investment banking? oh comon you guys are engineers, not MBA's!!! as it is your intelligence, money and time has all ended in the gutter. you guys could not find a job in your own field hence ended up somewhere else. so even being toppers has been a waste.
lets talk about the boom in india. i heard banks are recruiting MBA's to do door to door marketing of their products. MBA's? and then these guys have to sign a contract. now do you call that progress? and then kids are not completing their education and joining call centers, partying late into the nights and copying western culture.
so in essence, lets say this, that america has come to india like the british once came, and have kicked indian-ness out for good.
moral of the story: we cannot handle change, we are born slaves.
i am waiting for everyone to take me on now.

U r right .In geeta it is mentioned that swadharma is better than paradharmic activities.better to die in swadharmic activities then to prosper then paradhramic activities.they r engineers not MBA'S .better WORK as an engineer n die as engineer then to prosper as MBA'S.

Twist in the Tale:
by Anna on May 15, 2008 10:20 PM  | Hide replies

Twist in the Tale: See this is a problem for the people in the age 35 - 40. The kids start growing big and they are ready to embrace western culture. So our guys are pissed off and do a about turn and return back to their roots so that everything will be normal. Many of them continue abroad and allow their wards to embrace US culture and live lifelong. But coming back to india and painting yourself that enough is enough, I miss my daal chawal, I miss my country and all that crap after 10 - 12 years sounds illogical. Since you are scared and you dont want your son or daughter's future to go astray. you have taken a decision to come back. even I would have done the same thing which is best interest's of the family.

Read properly and answer. No theory or hypothesis buddy, only hard facts.I have written clearly that this is a problem for married people in the age group 35-40 and having kids & not for young people like you. Infact most of my friends are planning return back for the very same reason. Some are contemplating to shift the family only and prefer to stay back for financial reasons. Some pack their bags and comeback. My point is that every one can back at their will no comments on that ,but just saying reasons like parents are getting old, nobody to take care beats the logic. To be honest one of my friend & his wife were shocked to get a note from the school teacher saying kindly send contraceptives with your ward( he was in fifth grade then). This is a hard fact. No need for me to propagate wrong theories in a public forum. This is other way looking at the problem. Most of the people continue to leave further.I do visit europe regularly on onsite business trips and I have spoken on this subject at length to many people over there in our apartment. Most of them feel the same.

This is purely opportunistic in nature
by Savio J on May 15, 2008 10:10 PM  | Hide replies

The point here is that this decision to return or stay back has nothing to do with patriotism in any way. Opportunities are plenty and for any ambitious person that would be the big attraction. The added bonus of being close to family and in a familiar land makes it more attractive... If these opportunites did not exist then do you think these investment bankers and engineers would even consider returning? Very unlikely...

Also India is a land of cheap labor, lets not forget that. So while an investment banker in New York may make big bucks, he may still not make enough to have 3 servants at home to cook, clean and baby-sit. In Gurgaon that is possible even if he were to take a pay cut and still live like a King!

If the Indian economy were to collapse then see these guys rush back to you-know-where :)

I am an NRI looking to go back to India soon but it has nothing to do with patriotism - but for all the reasons mentioned above in my message. Patriotism is very relative but to me the ones who stayed back and took up public sector or NGO jobs to actually make a difference are the ones who are patrotic. Just because you root your ass there doesn't make you patriotic!

I love America for its inherent sense of equality and "audacity of the mind" , as well as "generosity of the heart", as Obama put it in his speech. In India, I see much hypocrisy prevalent, no respect for human rights/life. My heart has been sick with rage and contempt on seeing 8 year old kids working at servants in affluent people's houses, and being yelled and abused at, while the "ladies" of the house idle away. What kind of democracy is this, where child labor/ child abuse are so rampant. I love the US/Europe for they even respect janitors , look how highly regarded firefighters are in these countries. Indians say "Mera Bharat Mahan" at the drop of a hat, I suspect that it is only to re-inforce the sense of denial about the harsh realities that face them.

What a stupid fundamentals. I am in the US. After certain level, you are now allowed to step up. Its bullshit that india have the only caste based cry. Everybody follows that. US is not "United States" its "United Shits" I am in US since a few years and just seeking one good opportunity in india. Though I dont get it I will definitely come out from this pork eating culture. Just try to hear speech of OBAMA in detail you fool. You will realize that politicians dont have caste, creed and colour. All speaks nonsense only.

You for one deserve to go back, since you do not even know what this is all about. Maybe because of such absurd intellectual capacity that is why you are not even able to land a job in India even so far! Bon Voyage!

by Biplab Pal on May 15, 2008 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

First of all, I am IITian-working in cutting edge R&D in USA--but I also see the scripts on wall. India, the final destination because in USA opportunity is being reduced everyday. Most of the IITians didn't make it to the top in USA-only some did. Besides in Engineering, you are measured by whether you can open a new engineering start-up--other than that it does not make any difference if you are in a regular job!

Actually people are getting more money in mother India. I don't think it is for the feeling for their mother land...if so why large number of them used to fly abroad after getting the best facilities from here?? They are most intelligent people...So more educated people are more selfish...NOT ALL, BUT MANY

TRAFFIC

We like to explain with high sounding words like research infrastructure, work culture etc. but the biggest fear for returning Indians are the TRAFFIC situation and SMOG filled roads.

This is our biggest problem and least addressed. There is a sense of resignation when it comes to improving public transport and imposing parking fees and tolls on private vehicles.

because we indians are lazy and brainless people thats why we are doing a course of IT for 6months and Joining IT job. But in other engineering fields people requires brains and 4years of hard efforts to be a succesful engineer which our indian engineer cant do only they can sit opposite to computer and do programing.
No brainy engineers so poor infrastructure in indians. all brainless people u can find in IT

I recently read a news that in Orissa, two people inculding one 4 year girl is thrown out of bus since they are short in their busfare by 2 rupees and they crushed to death under bus wheel. This in nutshell an India in year 2008. We ga-ga over those success about few IIT,IIM grads and few businessmen and feel very proud of it. My question is isn't that we feel proud on ourself one thousands of incidents like above happens in India. This guy Aashutosh is biggest idiot coz he chooses India over US since US ecomomy is not doing good. Agree US is not the same economically as it used to but still it vaule the human life. We never see incidents like this in US. People do care of human life and it is not all about money. People like asutosh are rats who run away first when ship starts to sink.

Yes, Pyare moron cannot differentiate between crime and callous/irresponsible/disrespectful behavior from people here in India. For a country to develop first and fore most thing is that the poeple of the country develop love and respect for one and everyone in the country. Only then can every body expect to get equal rights and respect irrespective of how much money they have or what their social status is.

I agree with SHANE's thoughts.
