Life is good in Richmond Park, Gurgaon
by R Singh on Jun 01, 2008 07:55 PM  | Hide replies

Life is good here, no probelems with the fellow (poor) natives outside the gated community. No stray dogs barking in the night, no crime and no need to deal with the system that rest of the teeming millions have to deal with daily. No bus strike, no worries about inflation or shortage of water.

Life in Richmond Park, Gurgaon is great indeed. If it was not for the love of the motherland, the new upper class would never have seen the true value of India. They can have their daal-chawal (oh god!).

The hypocrisy is so blatant in this article that it is so tragic. We are converting our country into Brazil, where the rich live in gated communities and the poor (middle class) are left to fend for themselves. Do we really want to become a country like that.

Before comparing the niceties of how 'good' India is and how 'bad' US is, we need to look at our own failings our prejudices and our hypocrisy before we judge others.

You guys are not there yet in terms of comparing India and US. Don't even go there you morons.

nice one mr.singh. I agree with you and comparing India and Us on the basis of lifestyles of a selected few is very unfortunate. I can however say that people like them returning to India will certainly boost up our economy and bring in employment and money in the form of taxes to the government. But then as u said they cannot help their next door neighbour directly. Its through the taxes they pay that they can help their poor neighbours. This needs committed, good governence.
India has a long way to go. coming to gurgaon, the so called sprouting economic suburb of Delhi, I can find more number of flyovers, and shopping malls in there than a single bus. transportation is pathetic. No good economic places to eat. most of the houses run on power backups, and water is a major problem in summer. I havent seen a worse place till now that has been hyped so much

Indians returning to India here is why.
by kanu kangal on Jun 01, 2008 07:27 PM  | Hide replies

1) Year over year because of outsourcing there are hardly any engineering jobs. Many of these one factory towns are ghost towns.
2) Detroit home to auto manufacturing giants like Ford, GM has one of the highest unemployment rate, highest number of personal bankruptcy, home forclosure.
3) New york home of financial giants like Citi, Bear Stearns(finished, kaput!), Deutsche bank, Merrill lynch collectively laid off close to 20,000. Many equity analyst, traders, IT guys are in the job market.
4) Schering-plough has recently announced out sourcing their R&D to India. Many other companies like pfizer are already doing it. So pretty soon in USA in addition to engineering, computer science parents will have to forbade their children from taking pharmacy subject for college education.
5) Mutual fund like Franklin templeton, I heard have already outsourced teir equity research to India.
6) Year over year people are underemployed, there are Phd Finance guys working as programmer at Lehman brother for more than 5 years.

Well I can go on and on...no wonder are some of them are returning back.

Otherwise I do not think India has anything great to offer, I don't have to repeat which every intelligent person is aware of the status of india's affair. It is a policyless vote bank country where as some professor's article in Rediff mentioned that in India a convicted Robber will have difficulty getting job but can contest election and become CM. The other day I read Sanjay Dutt the convicte

Sanjay Dutt has plans to contest election. Boy it would be a day when a convicted Bomb Blast accomplice would be sworn in as defense minister. If it can happen anywhere it would be India.

Other than environmental pollution India is much better place now
by Biplab Pal on Jun 01, 2008 07:21 PM

I am IITian and settled in well paying job in USA. I enjoy every time I goto India-may be not city side but living in rural areas. Only issue is traffic jam and pollution in Indian Metros. Other than that I enjoy food, company, people much more in India than in USA. I live in a city which has been rated out to be 4th best place to live in America-and all because it is a nice garden city with forests, lakes and parks with cleanest air possible. This is the only thing missing in India. Except for some posh areas in Delhi, Goa and Juhu beach, environmentally clean city is very rare in India-other than that India has everything-money,growth-advanced profession-and finally people-our people.

Bunch of loosers

I live in canada from last 6 years. I am not an IITan . I passed out from a B-grade engg college 12 yrs back. I don't make a lot of money here in Canada around 50-60 k a year which is just average and maybe little on lower side. But in spite of all this I will never go back to India for anything it has to offer. India is a mess . I went there last time in 2006 and it is a disaster. There r no public toilets, no clean parks. My 7 year old son was lost. Even he at this age thinks that India is not for people. Forget about everything else. People there have no empathy for their brethren. Even while staning in a Queue , they tend to push and shove. They even don't have any respect for women and children in public places. These people who are returning to India are those who have been fired or laid off and have no hopes of getting other jobs in near future. The People here working as taxi drivers and factories also prefer here than there.

But The kids in India are no better than our kids here. Our kids have more compassion than their indian counterparts . In India the teenagers are more into mind games than the kids here. Our time was different. It is not the same in India anymore. We still give respect to our parents over the phone but can u say the same about the teenagers in indian today.of course there are some exceptions but I am going by majority here. India is the biggest carrier of HIV today and also biggest market for drugs. In fact the police there abets the drug mafia. Here at least the law enforcement fights crime ,there it supports it, Latest case being Arushi murder case. In fact the people who are returning to India will be blamed for this move by their kids 15- 20 yrs down the road. Take my word for it. They are doing injustice to their future generations for timely relief from economic pressures .

you are right sandeep and i dont deny the problems. But the last time i have lived in india i remember having the same issues but I have been just fine. I have received education from the same country you criticise, the law has been fair to me and most people i know. So sorry for what the country has been for me I cant help being optimistic. And also I am still young enough to know how it is right now in India. I see a stark difference between peoples perception among my generation and people who settled a long time ago. Finally all my fellow iit friends who returned within the last 5 years are happy and are doing better than they were in us or europe. There is only one thing i tell myself. my priorities are to be close to my family, friends, and be at the place which makes me feel at home culturally and socially.

I am not criticising your decision. I am just not happy with that country. I belong to kashmir. I am a kashmiri hindu. We went to rajiv gandhi for help and he advised us to be calm as minorities have to suffer. It was because we have no value as a vote bank. our house was burnt. nobody card for us, In canada I have got the respect from the govt and people in 6 yrs which i could not get in 30 yrs in india . I feel that this is my country who understands my emotions and gives me life and hope for the future. Come to toronto you will find more temples than any city in america or europe. We enjoy chaat papdi, have cultural shows etc. This is more of a home than India for us now. And above all we can prectice our religion without any fear of bomb blast etc

Why IIT grads abroad are returning to India?
by Suneet Khanna on Jun 01, 2008 06:53 PM

Not everyone is but some are. US is still a great place to live in due to good infrastructure, rule of law etc.
BTW, i see few doctors coming back. Healthcare in India sucks. It is typical of a third world country.

iitans returning to india
by Ramesh Koushik on May 23, 2008 12:59 PM

It seems that the returnees are in Finance or Software fields only - i dont think, Indian govt and industry can give good jobs to the research minded persons - add to the impending reservations in private sector - it seems things will not be all that rosy in future

Indian Professionals - Where to?
by Kris iyer on May 20, 2008 10:43 AM  | Hide replies

Everyone is clear on one ideal: If you were born in India, the ideal remains: Stay in your country and do what you can - "Little drops of water the mighty ocean make". Who knows, "Like Dhirubai Ambani, you may become a sizeable part of that ocean, making waves yourself!!
But this ideal is often balanced in some Indian minds by another - "Foreign" is better, "USA" is the best, more money, better roads, better of "everything". It is common with Indian parents of girls, "Let us get a son-in-law from the USA, may be amongst the H1B visa guys"!! They seem to think the side-walks there are paved in gold. Even a chap who cleans toilets in motels in the USA is better than some clerk in Australia or Newzealand. Now why do some Indians think that? Is there thinking entirely baseless. We can argue that USA is NOT what they think it is. But can we also say to them, in India life is easier?
Recently, we are able to say, "Salaries in India in many sectors is almost on par with salaries in the USA or UK."
But municipal goverment in India has broken down. It is a hard life here, without your own generator, drinking water and with very little travel to get to work.
With "reservation" politics entering the private sector, more confusion will be added to the calculations of those wishing to return.
My conclusion is that only the very hardy, very ambitious, who are confident of building a world-class industry out of a "fresh start" would benefit both India and themselves.

Man , Southies will never leave the lust of US. So no point debating. Southies wish to die in US. So be the case . Whereever u r be happy ... For me India is great ...... US lust still holds good for lower grades of Indian society.
Thats where most of the Southies belong, though talented Southies are in top shot position. Its only the poor or below average people who go through bodyshoppers to US and live a shit life but will never go to India until GC is in.
It happens in predominantly in poor or below average families in south India that they want US son-in-law. I have many Iyer's and Iyenger's friend whose parents don't think that way.
