PM came on air yesterday explaining the reasons and logic behind the most unpopular but inevitable petro price hike. He was virtually begging before the people of the country to cooperate. Its a pathetic sight. The cascading effect of the petro price hike is far dangerous than one envisages. It will fuel inflation and consequent increase in all essential commodities making life difficult for the common man. What else could the Govt do in the circumstances, is the biggest question. Anybody can critisize the Govt, but what is the solution. Its simple. If you take the base price of the petro products, it is 45% only and the rest a consumers pay in taxes. Now what is to be thought of is how to reduce taxes so that the burden of hike is not passed on to the consumers. This should be examined by the Govt. The sales tax imposed by the State govts should also be reduced as was done in West Bengal. No Govt whether it is State or the Centre like to part with the taxes they impose, then how could the prices be reduced? There must be some mechanism by which Govt should declare a tax holiday for sometime to the petro products and after the prices are stabilized, then impose the tax. For the time being the trend is going to be more on the upward side than downward. So more hike would be necessary in the next few months. How the Govt is going to graple with the situation calls for a highest standard of decision to minimise the damage. Its time up for the UPA govt whatever may be reasons.

less than 1 lakh p.a. - 10% 1 lakh to 2 lakh - 50% 2 lakh to 3 lakh - 65% 3 lakh to 4 lakh - 75% ... basically no matter what you earn, post tax amount would be same

This is the most stupid suggestion in years...
And I have understood that you are the sub 1 lakh category and are jealous of people earning more...
In fact I feel taxes are fine the way they are - infact slightly on the high side...
What needs to be done is by the Government to take active steps to step up alternate fuel, encourage by subsidies and tax cuts - usage of cars like Reva (done in Bangalore) so that the dependence on Crude is less...
We should use solar power to harness most of the basic heating / lighting per house - though as an initial investment it is expensive, on a long term this is the only solution

Please come to Gujarat to see the development of the state and the people .Compare with Kolkata whcih was more developed 100 year back than it is now and your question will get answered.It is only obscurantists like Tathagata Mukherjee who are responsible for keeping India as still an underdeveoped nation.
One cannot understand the sabre rattling by the Communists & BJP. For once, people understand that GOI had no other option but to raise fuel prices because of crude prices shooting thro' the roof. The Communists look like a bunch of spineless jokers when they talk of organizing national bundhs etc. On TV, they look as obsolete as the dinosaurs, with no fresh ideas of their own. They should now start participating in the TV comedy shows instead of in parliament as they have lost all credibility..

Instead of ebatign around the bush, Prakash Karat should simply admit that his party dont have guts to face elections! What a joke, this stupid communist outfit all actions of the government and yet protect it form the fall! If commis wish they can stop price hike, but they dont stop. Do you know something. The government wanted to increase the prices just by 3 rs and 1 re initially. But they have increased it by 5 and 3 so that these commies can stage some dharnas and shout slogans to bring down the prices rise to 3rs and 1 re. Commm r jokers ..they know that they cannot attain the majority reqd to form a central govt on their own in near future .They will also not take part in the cabinet because their wishes/ideology r not realistic...how come Oil companies cud keep quiet if they running out of money...burden should always be put on end user ..this wud help people to understand the real nature of price raise and pave the way for fuel consumption...Does comm made any statement requesting people to consume less fuel...

How ? It doesn't make sense to just hurl meaningless words. BJP is still the largest single party in the parliament. unlike commies who are limited to a couple of states
1. Kashmir-AP-Sikkim-Tibet-Nepal-Bhutan: India must firmly stand on its position that Indian terrortories illegally occupied by Pakistan and China are not for discussions/talks. Simply put they should be asked to 'GOT OUT' .
2. India must build its Nuclear stockpile strenghen its defence forces first before talking about 'trade' 'CBM' so that no country near or far can "even" think about what has happened in the past. China did that first before talking with ANY country. Economy and Army.
3. All Indians must be trained to act as vigilanties to stop terrorist attacks before they occur. All members of the Hindu Organizations must be trained in basic paramilitary self defence techniques.
4. Immigration laws must be strictly executed. POTA must be reinstated. Naxals, Moasits, Communists and Madrassas teaching Sharia laws must be banned by amending the constitution
