You know very little it seems, Accenture and Cap Gemini are not IT companies but more into business and management consultancy...yes they do have an IT wing, but both started off as CA firms and continue to take the Management Consultancy as their flagship business. I can't vouch for this list, but the top ten IT giants accross the world may be as under, I have taken the companies in IT space, excluding any bifurcation of HW / SW: (the numbers do not signify the ranking) 1 IBM 2 HP 3 Oracle 4 Dell 5 Intel 6 Adobe 7 Google 8 Microsoft 9 TCS 10SAP

i m sure even gupta doen't have an answer for ur question. do they pay you??
Out of the top 10 companies only I-flex earns maximum on its product revenue and is the top product sofware company in India in revenue and size. That is the way to go if India needs to have a size and scale of Microsoft. I think Oracle is doing right in acquiring I-flex in toto and launching it across the globe

All these companies are services companies' with no product portfolio. No one has such guts to come up with an innovative product. I pity u guys. All this happened because of cheap labour, which is not the case anymore. Very soon, we will see an indian slowdown, which will put back indian economy by 10 - 20 yrs. This is my prediction. Wait n watch.

Amar, I agree with yu. Yu are dead right.
As yu said, here in India, we have slight advantages on good english and because of this, we get all these service jobs. When, other countries like China, Philipines, Brazil show their skills in english, all western orders reach them one by one. Indian share will get reduced subsequently along with reduced pay structure. That's why many software biggies started having offshore centres in many other countries. But, now they give the image as if they are helping those countries. when this starts happening, will these companies relocate indian labour there?. It will never happen. They will use local low cost skills to manage the work. This may happen soon.I feel sorry for the IT guys who bank on these companies.
Yu are again right on the products comment. In fact, we donot need MS kind of companies here. Even MS can not emulate itself anywhere under the present condition. Software world never starts and stops with MS. Still there are many companies develop tools in many areas.
So, there is a huge potential for packaged software not only in India, but all over the globe.
Our biggies, during initial years work hard to get their billions and later they work hard to safeguard these billions.
They donot have mind set and courage to develop something in original and put into the competitive market and take that product for many years.
Even in India, many think, that India is the software capital of the world. what a pity!!

dont be so pessimistic, if westernrs can develop productswhy cant we. they are human beings like us. give indians some time. who thought 20 yrs ago that indians could develop services software companies that too world class. innovation is the next step after just offering servies. there are many innovative software start ups in silicon valley started by indians.

Karthik, It is nothing to do with whether Indian companies has a choice of being in product development or remain in services. It is to do with their mentality. None of the biggies are ready to take risk. Moreover they dont make any investments on employee talent development towards product arena. To my knowledge Wipro has investments done on R&D, this company started out as a product company and to match with the peers, they also fell in trap.
Your citation on Indian people who own product companies may not be applicable here. Those fellas are either having a green card or USCZ and who have planned to get settled here. We cant blame them as whatever they have brought up is due to the extensive education and knowledge they have got in through higher studies in the US.
My honest view on the way they run business is not that great.Software services is a knowledge industry, till the time the consumers are not realizing whether they are getting the value for what they pay, these guys will be in the biz. After all, no mainstream work is getting off shored.
I really have a great faith in Indian talent. No questions. But not on the india based service companies.
I have more to say as an insider. But i am running out of allowable characters for a post.

For your kind information, Vineet Nayar is still the CEO of HCL Technologies and will most probably retire from there. The CEO of Tech Mahindra is a person with a similar name.
TCS used to be a v good cmpy . But now problem is middle management is crap . Top think tank is still gold and that is the reason profits are going up . But gradually talent base is getting screwed for 2 reasons . First is that crap middle managers who don't have the potential to lead and groom young talent , hence talented and smart ppl take a quick onsite and quit around 4-5 ys of expr . The mediocre grp gets onsite late and they continue to be with and gradually get into Middle management and screw up up coming talent

Reason is Software companies fail to identify qualities of a good candidate who can be a leader. They see only his professional qualifications. They get flatterd with speech, high scores in exams (god knows actual reason behind the marks ;-) ). etc etc...
I told you earlier... that TCS is the best. Man this is the best what mediocre Indians cant evenday dream. Coming from the villages, with a very mediocre academics how many people could dream staying in the First World for really long periods. TCS has made fantasies of 100K Indians possible... the places and life style people used to watch in movies and sulk sleepless nights in frustration are now possible in reality.... Poor villagers from Covelong are now having board meetings in California... could we ever imagine 15 years back. Yes TCS you have made the rag to riches story possible to every average Indian household...Truely marvellous. Kudos TCS.. You are the saviour of modernIndia.

TCS does that but not only tcs. All other topline indian companies like infy, wipro, satyam, hcl along with the multinationals IBM, Accenture, Capgemini etc do the same. Its actually difficult to say one is better than the other. It actually depends where one's talent would be identified depending on the type of work, manager, project, a bit of luck etc.
