Welcome organised Retail
by Vivek on Sep 14, 2007 03:04 PM  Permalink

Mr. Ajit,

Its not clear what point you are trying to make. Perhaps you are not clear with it yet.
Its trying time for you as well to prove a point.

Anyways every industry & every person should go through a trying & testing mode so that he can learn more & be more professional, competitive & efficient.

If things are costly in France it doesnt mean that even a poor country like India should keep essential commodities costly for the common man.
And for your information Carrefour, the worlds second largest retailer is from France!! So organized retail is there everywhere in the world, even in communist China!
So if consumers & common man is reaping the benefits of organized retail the world over, why should the Indian consumers be deprived of this benefit.

And with the Indian retail market of $350 billion, there space for everybody, so let the consumer get a benefit & let him use his money better.

People opposing organized retail is like taking India back to medieval times & most of those who are opposing it are either middlemen or those who have cheated the common man till now with inflated rates on inferior quality products.

Rural Economy with capitalist mindset
by Binu Alex on Sep 14, 2007 02:57 PM  Permalink

While being trying not to be project oneself as a capitalist, everyone in India becomes one because the new economy has changed the way you eat, live and sleep. I happened to read a statement recently.

%u2018Dr S Ramadoss, the Pattal Makkal Katchi leader, is spearheading the opposition to Reliance Fresh on the ground that it will break the backbone of the rural economy in the southern state%u2019

Nothing can be more rubbish and irrelevant than this statement. How can Reliance Fresh or for that matter any retail chain break the rural economy? On the contrary it will enrich the rural economy. This has direct relevance to why Radio news was never allowed in private sector in India. Here is how.
Imagine a professional radio news service all across the country. It has expose and news and analysis on what is happening in the country, information on the prices of commodities that a rural person needs from time to time, weather information and forecast that helps him to make decisions on his crop patterns, wisdom so that he can vote for the best possible candidate.
Hey stop here. What is that last point? Wisdom so that he can vote for the best possible candidate????
This is what hurts people like S Ramadoss and for long Mrs Indira Gandhi who had a stranglehold on the airwaves in the country. If you give rural guy wisdom, how on earth is he going to vote for you? So information was kept away from him. He could not afford a newspaper or a magazine. Television was far from his

Change is a fact of life. If we apply the same yardstcik to everyday aspect of the life, we still would be roaming the cities in tonga or travelling from one place to another in a bullock cart. And every coin has two sides. Likelwise retail business in the hands of majors also have two sides. One personal question to the author of this article- Do you or youe family members still shop at the corner kirana stores? Do you still refuse to go to shopping malls? Answer the question truthfully and if the answer is no, please look into the mirror before writing any new articles
