If one is in poverty for 5 years then he succide. suiccide cases were a year back, so farmers were succiding only because they were not able to earn from last 5 years (3 years of NDA)

Nauzer Gagrat
Burdening the salary class
by Nauzer Gagrat on Feb 28, 2007 11:03 PM

Successive budgets by this Finance Minister has seen the ax fall on the salaried middle class in one form or the other. The latest is a token gain of Rs. 1K by enhancing the exemption limit by Rs. 1000 while imposing a education cess of an additional 1 percent on income tax and on utilities of daily use like electricity and telephones. This is akin to treating thee 300 plus million middle class with utter contempt. Leave aside gaining Rs 1000 most people will end up spending more. In these days of rapidly rising inflation this is a cruel joke. Entreaties to the Finance Minister will as usual be met with pompous disdain, and arrogance. The only way open is to wait till the next general election and hit the present government hard by voting against it. The congress forgets that one of the main reasons that they were able to form a government was due to the fact that the BJP in the last general election was able to bag only a couple of seats in urban constituties. The voting trend in Punjab will be a precursor as to what will happen during the next general election if the middle class is always unfairly taken for a ride.

BUDGET
by Jayant on Feb 28, 2007 10:42 PM  | Hide replies

I don"t think it proper to critisize FM.
Ours is a developing economy and the development
has to reach to all classes of society. Further, any FM of any ruling party has to
perform a very difficult duty of bringing in
an overall balance between different factors
viz. Demands from (1) Workmen (2) Industry
(3) International community (4) World bank
(5) Agricultural sector (6) Traders within
the nation (7) International market (9) Poor
class of the society (10)Defence.
Different factors have exactly opposit demands.
Any FM is required to fulfil the requirements
from the megre sources. It is therefore, but
incumbent that all expectations of each class
can not be satisfied. After all we must keep
in mind that our economy is not a rich economy
in the world. Various natural calamaties like
earthquake, tsunami, floods, etc. add fuel to
the fire. Hence, at least educated people
must understand the hard path of FM and try to
avoid harsh reactions regarding budget.

What is Salaried People's real, inner position ?
by Mr Shah on Feb 28, 2007 10:34 PM  | Hide replies

I make a humble request to journalists to make a survey of difference in,Bank employee's gross income and net take home Pay. Mostly their monthly salary is around 20,000 and net take home pay is 6,000, due to many kind of deductions. Major deduction is surprisengly the staff credit society loan !! This is becoz Bank employees are non currept. But the tax is applicable to gross salary only, which is around 2,500 per month. This is a miserable situation, and evolves many questions to think ahead.

RE:What is Salaried People's real, inner position ?
by Jayant on Feb 28, 2007 11:00 PM
Mr. Shah, I am sorry to say that I find it
difficult to agree with you. Staff credit society loan is not compulsory for bank employees. In fact, no loan is compulsory.
Employees want to enjoy different pleasures and
they apply for loan for their own satisfaction.
Hence, if net take home is less, Govt. is not
responsible for that. On the contrary, Govt.
gives concessions in Income Tax regarding
Housing loan instalments, PF etc. Further,
medical expenses are also reimbursed for general
and special reasons such as hospitalisation.
Hence I fail to agree with you. The point of
corruption is also misleading. Unearthing of
various scams in banking industries are distinct
examples of corruption. The most important
point is that it is not morally correct to link
less net take home amout to corruption.
Banking industry is a basic necessity of our
economy. But forgetting this fact, bank employees have gone on strike for irrelevant
issues and disturbed economic life/transactions.
e.g. the issue of disinvestment. This issue is
the problem of Govt. and bank employees should
not direct the Govt. which is elected by the
majority of population.
Thus, in my opinion, your arguement is untenable.
- Jayant.

All bank employees may not be corrupt but at the same time it is not correct to say that there are no corrupt employee in Bank. Take the number of senior executives suspended till now in nationalised Syndicate Bank. All of them suspended on corruption charges & face trial. Bank employees certainly enjoy more facilities than others who work in private companies. The pension they receive after retirement is most of th time more than what they were earning as take home salary during service!. Bank employees have absolutely no right to grumble as they are the most organised employees who have the power of holding country's economy at ransom by calling strike on drop of a hat.

However I must say that Chidambaram has disappointed salaried class in his budget.

Prevent corruption, lower tax for all and make essential items affordable.
by Vinodh on Feb 28, 2007 10:22 PM  | Hide replies

To stop corruption all you need is the will to do it. 'Hard cash' is the most important reason for corruption. So decrease cash in the system (not liquidity, just cash). Alternatively
1. Make all transcations to be done only thru credit/debit cards.
2. All businesses (shops, autos, etc) should accept cards for amounts more than Rs 50/- or so and should charge a very nominal charge for transcations( like 0.50 paise per transcation or so - the can still make money thru volumes).
3. Withdraw all currency notes from the market to discourage people from carrying cash as much as possible (maybe keep only the Rs 10/- andRs 20 currency notes) and keep only coins in circulation.
4. A person can have more than one bank account but all bank accounts are linked to the PAN (only one PAN per person).
5. Reduce all taxes (now only a small percentage of the people pay taxes and since there is a parallel black money economy in the country if this comes out there is more money for the govt) and increase compliance thru the above methods.
6. Make punishments for economic offenses, corruption, laundering, etc very very high. Punishments should act as deterents. Make punishment fines 10 or more times the amount of fraud done the expenses incurred by the govt in bringing the wrong-doer to book. Go even to the extent of confesticating the property and even cancelling educational qualifications, passports, driving license, etc to make life miserable for the wrong-doers (i am taking it a bit too much - but u get the point).

Concentrate on agri. We should be a food-surplus country.

Basic needs like food, clothes, home (first house), education, health needs to be very affordable.

So exempt tax for medical equipments, etc.

Reality should be bought only for usage. No one should buy land for investment purpose and keep it idle. Non-usage of land within a time limit after buying should invite substantial taxes. Thisshould probabaly make only genuine buyers buy reality/houses and discourage people who buy for investment purpose and thereby make realytity sore to unreal limits.

If punishments for economic offenses are severe and if they are properly implimented, guess who will be hurt most? You know the answer! That is why such things do not happen in India.

It is really thought provoking suggestions though regarding the punishments given to the corrupt persons, it should be impartial irrespective of the status/position/influence of the concerned person
