Adding more IITs won't be helping much as far as the quality is concerned. You can take a live example of IIT Guwahati. Though it's an IIT, guys were kinda reluctant to go there as it was a new addition and the campus placements weren't up-to-mark. It will take it next 4-5 years to come parallel with an REC.
Addition of new IITs will just increase the count, but they aren't gonna help to sustain the same standard by any means.
I would suggest the govt to increase the facilities in the existing colleges and let them enhance their standards. After all, they do have their own selection process. So can't they have the same kinda entrance exam like JEE?
I think there is a lot of artificial halo around the IITs. Definitely there are lot of Engineers graduated from other Engg institutes who are performing much better than the so called brainy fellows. Let there be white paper on the performance of the IITians viz -a -viz the others. Where the IITians shine is in their communication- which can be attributed to their upper middle class lineage. On pure technical grounds there are lot of people who can outperform the IITians. One thing we must understand - may be getting in to IIT is difficult- but that alone does not ensure that the product will be excellent. How one learn through the 4 years of study is much more important. We in India always look at things from one side only. Let us change ourselves first.
I dont think opening new IITs is going to help us much. IIT has its image because of its students and nothing else. Opening new IITs and increasing the number of seats will definitely affect the average quality of student which will have worst impact in not-so-hot departments i terms of student quality because all the JEE good performers will end up opting Computer Science and Electrical Engg. Rather than opening new IITs, govt should include more and more engg colleges in center list and increase the fund so that students there get all the facilities they need. Making of a good engineer does not need IIT brand name but good facilities which does not seem to be the focus of govt. How many MIT,Stanford or UCB USA has ? One. So why many IITs in india. Is it because IIT already has its image in the market. Rather than making so many IITs, we should focus on so many "IIT-like" colleges.
CERTAINLY NOT. Of what use are the IITs when the CREAM of IITians have succeeded in contributing and developing DEVELOPED COUNTRIES ironically ! Thanks to Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's dream of the IITs without the dream of building Institutions to retain them.
We have so many engineering colleges , govt can up grade thie facilities like IIT , name is not the issue , the facilities are. and improving facilities will cost less then creating new ones.
IITs are meant to churn the creamy brains from a big lot. Increasing the number of IITs would hamper IITs image by producing more average IIT enginering graduates as against the few intellectual IIT engineering graduates being produced now.
Yes. We need more IITs, as population is growing and It should be proportionate to it. There should be enough employment opportunities in India itself.
as per me it has to be more with the same norms of entry in to them. by this we can stop the brain drain from india. as i am in uk for my higher study, i can see more indian brains which india needs them for unique independent developing country!
