yes definitely we do need more iits as there are many equally bright students out there who could not make it to iits and have to settle in colleges with little facilities.
question of dilution will come into picture only if the govt doesn't extend the same support to the new iits.
to be fair enough there must be one iit in each state.
I don't think establishing more IITs is going to help inimproving the image of India anyway. We can not change the mentality of the staff and professors at those new REC turned IITs where corruption may be prevailing and its tough to make out whether the teachers r up to the mark or not and u can not just fire the undeserving ones out!
Anything that is available in abundance (and hence easily) loses its value. More the number of IITs less will be the competition, which will dilute the quality intake of IITs.
Further, why should Govt. concentrate on Engineering alone so much? Boost fundamental research, which will fuel our growth in the next century.
If we consider Indian IT Industry, I think its a partial success. We have not created any major technology in India. The technology leaders are from the West. We still pride ourselves as good users of that technology and Service Providers.
India seems like has a long fascination of changing names and assuming that changing names will solve all problems. It is totally a political decision which does not have any rationalilty.
But, do not worry...what will happen in future, in that case brand of IIT will be destroyed and a new brand of 'IIT Delhi' 'IIT Kanpur' etc etc will emerge. There will be transition period which will frustrate the people from 'real' IITs.
But, as an IITian I am also very frustrated by this decision.
More IITs?sounds good.I really don't endorse the view that this will lead to dilution of quality. The rigid standards set out by selection commitee will ensure
this;on other hand our country will have more skilled human resources which otherwise would have been wasted.
no mmore iit's must be there as it will affect the prestige of those seven colleges which are among the worlds best colleges of world . at the word iit would no more be a dream
i am a graduate from iit roorkee..i know what is the situation of iit roorkee...increasing the number of iits will definitly cause the degradation of quality...no more iit please ..improve the condetion of iits. its more than enough...if the govt is planning to increase the no of iit then it'll b purely on political basis..who knows an iit will b in bihar which claims the last possition is literacy, rules and regulation..it will look ackward to place an iit in such a place just with an aim to increast the no and with out any other motive
The IIT brand was made by the past generation, a generation hardened by the freedom struggle, and a longing for a prosperous and happy nation. They truly worked hard to build a reputation from scratch. We are just able to maintain it because IITs remain, to a large extent free of corruption, politicisation, regionalism, and communalism.
It would be much better for other colleges to try to emulate the IITs in policies, that is pure meritocracy in the administration and building a feeling of spartan egalitariansm and respect for knowledge among the students and staff. If you were to do that, more universities would automatically enjoy a better reputation. Please don't dilute and spoil one of the good things we have in India.
