Ofcourse yes. Because to prosper what we need is an endless talent pool. More number of IITs will definitely help the process. But we have to ensure that the standard is also maintained without any compromise. Thats why it would be better to go for new institutes rather than converting existing ones.
Yah, its very imp for a country like India with a population of 1 Billion to have at least some world class educational & research institutes, specially when India is emerging as a World power, which she deserves.
Not only, we need to increase IITs but also we need to pay attention towards quality & quantity of research. Dr. Murali Manohar Joshi was right when he was thinking to convert existing IITs into research institutes only like IISc, & all to shift all the undergraduate programs to NITs (erstwhile RECs).
Yah, there can be some problem & resistance while implementing his vision, but if it is done with determination then its not difficult. may be, we dont see any benefit in near future, but we'll definitely in a much better position after say 5-10 years hence.
There is no question that we don't need them. The competition in the entrance exam is very fierce and it is increasing every year as the number of students appearing are increasing. Therefore increasing number of seats is very important. Thus we need more IIT's.
But converting the existing institutes into IIT's is not a good idea in my opinion. This is because just upgrading the institutes won't change the studying and work culture there which are very different for IIT's. Moreover this will not make any difference to number of engineering seats if we see as a whole. Thus we should upgrade the existing institutes and establish new institutes for IIT's.

hi, rediff we need more iits so that more students can get benefit from these institutes as in present time our nation requires good brains so that in coming year we were in the hit list of developed country thanks rediff
Yes offcourse if it's possible, if any way it's not possible due to money, Goverment can ask to corporate sector and Gov can raised the Fee, in india public is willing to pay higer fee for good schools,so in my opinion it's good to have more iit's and iim's too.
NO. It will certainly dilute their exclusiveness. Also it would be better if we can form a competitive array of university which chanllenges IITs and we can let them compete with each other ! By that way we can bring in more power and competition and there by success for ourselves.
certainly a good thing. but important is how it is done. If govt does this by just upgrading the status of existing univs then .. huh .. it wud certainly dilute the iit status. It's important to understand the professors and the strict curriculum makes iit what it is now !! But has anybody addressed this ??
I feel that the IIT's are a criminal waste of money atleast when one considers the way the system is presently setup - take the best brains of the country, train them with the best of facilites at massively subsidised rates and then export them???? I think that all IIT students should either be compulsarily made to work for say ISRO, DRDO or the Army research wing for 10 yrs or they should pay say 10 lakhs as an exit amount (much like the AFMC college pune). Otherwise their degrees should just be taken back. In the US, MIT does not give out subsidised education, neither does Harvard, so why should the IIT's be cheap ???
