Government is going ahead on wrong path by taking decision of increasing number of IIT's..it will just lead to spoiling the traditional supremacy and quality of institutions. The naming of these institutions should not be IIT's ..why they want to spoil the brand name of IIT.If we have to retain our traditional intellectual edge over the world's technologists then this decision needs revise in thinking.
Yes we need more IIT's, to create good brainies in India. Every year lot of students are going to other countries for post graduate studies. Now we can stop those by increasing the number of IIT's. Now a days students which are studied out of India(mostly USA), they may not get 100% jobs. Here in IIT's every one can get good jobs. Instead of studying in USA, here they can reduce their expenditure and get good future.
The government is crazy. IIT brand has been built over a period of time. You can't just name another institute IIT and assume that it will be of the same quality. This is just diluting the brand.
If you have to get quality institutes, improve the quality of RECs. Ensure that the students get quality education so that they can compete with IITs and prove that they are as good. Just naming them as IIT will not improve their quality. It will just reduce the quality of the IIT brand.
In US, they din't name every university Harvard. They created a Stanford and a Wharton, which competed with harvard.
Create institutes and let them make a name for themselves instead of banking on an already established name.
We need many more IIT's coz it helps in improving the quality of engineering more over they raise the standards of engineering euducation which is on decline due to emergence of new colleges mushrooming across every district in india...These upgradations must hav been done longaback so that we would hav witnessed much more development than now...leave alone dilution od exclusiveness.Anyway..itz never late to come up with more new IIT's
Education is fast becoming a source for earning FOREX. If India with its cost advantage can tap the Afro- Asian Market ranging from South East Asia to Lebanon to Englo-Phone Africa and even covering some parts of Easter European countries with whom we had traditionally good academic relations then having more IITs makes a point. India must emerge as a strong partner in academic world. If we have one of the largest pool of skilled scientific man power, it must be given opportunity for the benefit of country. Must we also remember taht education is a tool of peaceful and subtle diplomacy. The liknages and associations made in academies are more lasting and beneficial than normal channels of diplomacy. In any case professors are more respected than leaders and diplomates.
There are already plenty of unemployed iitians roaming on the streets of India and USA...And being very practical, no regional engineering college is worthy enough of being converted into an IIT in the present condition.Even if u give them resources i seriously doubt if they are ever going to match Brand IIT...This is just a sorry situation for the brand name...and i think only time can tell us the true result of the step.
Well i am myself a student of NIT(formerly Regional engineering college). And i feel that simply building the infrastructure or giving state of art facilities to an institute wont make it an IIT.The point is how they utilise these things effectively and what technology do they produce.
What IITians have and what we lack is the attitude that makes the difference. So,simply saying that RECs are being upgraded will not make any big difference. The real challenge lies in building an attitude and changing the entire public sector culture that has marred the present day institutes.I believe new IITs should be created from the scratch because we realise that people are not flexible enough to accept the changes.
I think that if government starts building more IIt's then IIT loses it's place and would be just like a regional engineering college, just another engg.college in the corner, moreover i think that instead of building more IIT's govt. should give funds to upgrade already made IIT's to international standards ,because it's not the name only that matters but the engineers produced by IIT's matter.government will also not be able to find that class of faculty which is at present in IIT's .
