it is not good
by suresh on Oct 20, 2003 07:23 PM  Permalink

I think it is not good to increase the number of IITs because both it will cost so much for Government and attaining the same quality of education will take more time which will surely lose their exclusiveness

Do we need for IITs
by S.N. Bansal on Oct 20, 2003 07:17 PM  Permalink

My suggestion is not to increase the no. of IITs but to raise the overall standard of education, right from the root. Provide infrastructure to all the engineering/medical colleges so that standard through out the country remains the same. Every one should be given opportunity to raise his level of education. We are seeing that the rich people can provide education to their children and get them trained for competitions from reputed Institutes and obiviously they will get through. The gist is that all this is being done for rich people. There should be one standard of education through out India and then say let them sit them in competition. This will be fair. So there is no need to increase the no. of IITs. In our country people are behind only making their sons/daughters engineers and doctors. They does not even think of other fields.

I think it will dilute the brand value of IIT world wide ,something that will have a deep impact on indian brain value across the globe.Instead the govt should try to build up another brand something like National instiute of technology.

But first of all the govt should control the shops of technical education that mave mushroomed at every corner of this country like pan/bidi shops in this country.

It's a good idea to make some more IIT's in the country but the number of IIT's shud b kept limited. There r some institutes like IT-BHU etc which are of the same level as existing IIT's but still suffer from lack of funding and fecilities.

IITians are the cream of india .... this cream shudn't get dilute at the cost of increasing number of IIT's.

more IITs
by Karthik on Oct 20, 2003 01:09 PM  Permalink

It would be better to develop current IITs still better with latest equipments for the purpose of Research which demands still more money. Converting RECs would be the other better alternative.

Do we need more IIT's
by pushkar on Oct 20, 2003 09:16 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think we are confused when we say there should be more IIT's. Its because we think in terms of reputation as well as better education. IIT's do have name all over the world that's because of its better education. If we increase the IIT's it wont bring the reputation down if we make sure that all the parameters which make IIT's are there in newly found IIT's. If there are more IIT's there is definitely improvement in technical education that's what we want as a country and reputation of present IIT wont go down because then each IIT will be recognised differently like each REC is identified. Hence there should not be any Identity Crisis and give opportunity for present non IITs to go for higher education. In the end I would say talking of Exclusiveness is selfish but other would be good only if we make sure it indeed meet all present qualification of IITs.

when u say if we maintain standard then there is no harm..but the problem is iits brand sell because not every tom dick and harry can be in iit..but if u increase the number of intake you are bound to compromise on the qualiy of student that you intake.
