No,i disagree to this kind of step as havin more iits is goin to dilute the value of iitians who are considered the best all over the world.Only the best of india should be into iit.But governement should think about upgrading the quality of regional coll not diluting iits by making regional coll equivalent to them in status....
The more important question I feel is why we need more IITs?
If the answer is to produce more number of IITians then why not rename all the remaining engineering colleges "IIT"; and if the aim is to improve the quality of research in the country then you can upgrade the existing institutions without changing their name. Also the quality of research taking place within the existing IITs is no way near to the best in the world and more funds and better vision will go a long way in improving the quality of research in IITs.Increasing the number of IITs will destroy its exclusivity and its charm without effecting the quality of research.
If the government wants to upgrade other institutes to the IIT level then they are welcome to do so without changing their name. We can have a series of institutions rivalling IITs for both glamor and government funds. The competition can lead to an increase in the level of research in both institutes.
ya ,i think we need it badly .having faced the jee and studying in NIT i think there are still lot of brains which r in no way lesser than iitians if given the facilities, and anyway the institutes that will be upgraded are not so bad either.as they also input the toppers from the state entrances.
definitely there should be more IITs as mostly the present IITians move to the US and other countries so high quality tech force is needed for our own country and that can be done by having more IITs and it will definitely help in growth of India. But a word of caution is that the newly formed IITs must be made for the same level of freedom that IITs njoy and a good funding too.
