5NIT
by Walesh Kumar on Oct 23, 2003 06:52 PM  Permalink

I think that its agreat decision by Vajpayee to upgrade NITs to the status of IITs.It wont be false if it was said that RECs like Surathkal and Trichy have the potential to get upto the standard set by the IITs.Just a little attention to these colleges and they can be among the best....Its a great decision coz not all deserving students can make it to just the 5 IITS that too keeping branch in mind....Good thinking on part of Vajpayee

There are indeed five NITs(earlier RECs)worthy of becoming an IIT with their huge brain pool and good infrastructure. All the top 5 NITs- Trichy,Surathkal,Allahabad,Calicut and Warangal-have very good infrastructure and faculty line-up. Make them IITs and they are sure to reach the other IITs' standards amazingly fast.Owing to the fact that India is rapidly becoming a superpower in the knowledge field, we need to set up more IITs so as to continue to be the best.

12 more IITs...
by nikhil on Oct 23, 2003 06:44 PM  Permalink

I think people are totally confused by the initiative taken by our Govt. First of all, inclusion of 5 more IITs is not dividing the current IITs. The faculy, facilities and everything is not going to be provided to the new ones, by the old ones. The only institutions which are able to prove themselves upto the specifications put up, from the perspectives of IITs are only given the chance. And this should be a good news for the country, especially for the students planning to move into the technical field.

Im basically an NIT student in Karnataka, which the No 1 contender for transforming into IIT, and I think this institutions deserves rank, as all of you know it had already beaten 3 of the IITs in the Engg COllege Rankings last year.

More IITs
by Goutam on Oct 23, 2003 06:11 PM  Permalink

Have the IITs really contributed to India's technological prowess ? Needs more investigation. Should its success be viewed by how many students work in US for major Multinationals ? Or how many genuine innovations have contributed to India's scientific and technological progress ?

Do we need more IITs
by Dr.Arvind Jian on Oct 23, 2003 05:50 PM  Permalink

I per my view we need more IITs but if we convert the present institute in ti IITs it is not good because the presents institute like Roorkee university changed in to IIT but the Peoples there still living with University syetem after three year no much change in the syetem there so we must open totaly new IIT not to give any institiute IIT name and stop UG class in IITs only research needed there

7 more iits
by Anupam on Oct 23, 2003 05:49 PM  Permalink

Why people crave to drive a ferrari or mercedes benz? The answer is very simple ..becoz they are exclusive ..not everybody drives it ..lots of effort goes into making it..similarly,, for 3000 seats which are optimum for 1,20,000 students appearing for IIT JEE..lots of hard work, burning of midnight oil goes making each candidate to push a little more harder ..so u can selg decide......

Do we need more IIT's?
by Milan Chatterjee on Oct 23, 2003 05:13 PM  Permalink

Well

I guess, that we need more IIT's but they should maintain their exclusivity and the authorities should not dilute the quality of the students being admitted to fill the total seats in them.

it will only dilute the name & fame of IIT
by Pankaj on Oct 23, 2003 04:20 PM  Permalink

Its really a "Tughlaqian Task" to make some REC as IIT...coz IIT is IIT..RECs dont have the quality to be called as IIT...and already thr r seven IIT (including Roorky) ....so Govt should take more interest in modifying the infrastructure of the RECs.

the point that increase in number will relegate the exclusiveness of iit but point is that if you explore the calibre of nitians are comparable with that of iitians .

if we increase the number of iits it will leads to increase in quality engineers .
