CEO is about strategy & management
by vinayak on Feb 20, 2006 11:06 PM

I work as CEO and I don't hold any management degree.
I did my BE computers and worked as programmer, software engineer, team leader, project manager, solution architect and currently working as CEO.

CEOs come from any one of the following sector:
technology, operations, finance, accounts, sales, marketing and many more...

To become CEO, you need proven management record. Whichever department you manage you have to be good at it. You have to learn functionality of other departments and learn how to handle them to achieve ultimate objective of organization.

You have to learn seeing bigger picture and also inspire others to see brighter side of life. Balance between "Empathy towards your employees" and "focus on organization growth" is most important element.

You must be good in grasping everything. It includes market trends, focus on innovations, smooth operations, processes & quality delivery. And definitely it takes time to learn so be patient.

MBA may be added advantage to become CEO but its not the only key to be CEO. Institution can teach you how to manage but how effectively you manage depends on you.

Specialisation doesn't matter ........
by Sandeep Jadhav on Jul 19, 2005 08:41 PM

I would like to say that the specialisation doesn't matter when you want to be a CEO of the company in future. It doesn't make any sense.Of course marketing is that specialisation which enables you to create new ,fresh ideas for the market. Its not like that you'll be the CEO of the industry in just 2 or 3 years after getting the MBA degree in a particular specialisation. It needs experience , vast experience of each and every thing. If we take the exapmle of finance & banking ...today its hot field. Most of the students are getting attracted to finance & banking .I am Marketing student and i believe marketing is important & more critical than finance in business. The success of financial services (like credit card ,loan )depends upon how well they are marketed.Because today, there are many financial industries providing service to people & there isn't much difference between interest rates,so its important how you market the particular type of product.
I just want to say that it doesn't matter if the specialisation is in the field of marketing or finance. Any kind of MBA shows you the path of achievement , but the person should havee these abilities to achieve success.

Do specialisations really matter?
by Manasa Dhanapal on Jul 19, 2005 09:35 AM

The argument of "Finance Vs Marketing" is very much like the famous debate topic " What came first...Chicken or Egg? ". MBA is not about Marketing or Finance. It is all about honing your management skills and enhancing knowledge about your area of interest. Any manager who is for "finance" and "against" marketing or vice-versa is supposedly not eligible to be a manager. A manager is someone who needs to know everything about the business he is into. A HR manager can never be successful if he can't decide on the needs of a marketer and act accordingly. A finance guy can never sell his product if he doesnt apply the correct marketing strategy. A marketer can never come up with the right estimation for a product if he doesnt know his finance.
The specialization criteria for getting into a job still stands firm with most of the companies. But then again, what really matters is what YOU want to be, and where YOU want to go. A great responsibility of training (not teaching) the student falls on the shoulders of the B-schools; in helping students achieving what they want to be.
Getting into a job is not difficult, but keeping it is. MBA helps an individual in understanding how well he/she can handle a job and be happy. In fact, MBA is not only for managers, but for all those employees struggling to cope with their work and their counterparts at work - whether he is a marketing guy or a finance geek? Hmmm that really doesnt matter.
